This is something I've been trying to do some reading up about but could do with some extra advice.

I bought a car back in December which I'm now selling. I would rather sell it now because the tax will run out at the end of the month, and I think the MOT too.

The problem I have, is after calling the DVLA the last owner still hasn't sent off the V5.
I have the green slip, so I'm told I can apply with a V62 to get it myself. Happy to do that, but it can take 4 weeks to arrive, by which time I'll end up with a car with no MOT and tax.

What are my options? Can I sell the car and the new owner apply for the V5 using a V62 and by paying £25? How safe is this?
Any advice is appreciated.

im not sure how it works fully, but to be honest you might struggle to sell it without the v5 anyway.

Hhhmmm why are you selling it so soon? Suspicious.....

Only kidding, but you will struggle to get good money for a car's age/condition etc without the V5

I might end up just having to tax and MOT it... but if I can avoid doing that it saves me money and hassle. I'm having to sell it because I'm taking a career change to something I've always wanted to do, but gives me much less time to play with cars. frown

I'd get the car MOT'd if it is due at the end of the month, then apply for V5 + new tax at a DVLA office using the new keepers slip. That way you'll not have any problems with the tax if it takes a while for the new V5 to arrive.

I wouldn't try selling the car without a V5 tbh - more aggravation than it's worth and has already been said, you're likely to make less than you would with one.

I had three cars in a row where the seller hadn't sent off the V5 and it didn't occur to me that I hadn't had a new one through until it came to tax them. That many trips to DVLA Reading just started getting tiresome.

They can send V5 replacements quickly to the original address and owner for the £25 fee, I had to call up after discovering I'd lost mine and it only took about 3 working days to arrive. I think any request other than calling will result in the usual months of waiting.

I cant believe people still dont send off the v5.

Whenever I sell a car the new owner gets photo copies of the original from me + I send the form off asap by recorded delivery.

I dont want a car that is still registerd in my name getting me speeding tickets etc.

When you go to tax it will that not kick off the V5 application process?

To be honest OP, you will have issues selling it without the docs, put yourself in the potential buyers place...

Get the ball rolling asap, the DVLA are not as bad as some of the naysayers on here comment.

It may not go down too well with a new buyer but remember a V5 isnt proof of ownership, it only shows who is the current keeper.
You can sell the car to them confirming you are the current owner, giving them a receipt for their cash sold as seen
They can apply for a V5

And not reading the helpful posts (from 5 years ago).

Do we have bots joining PH now asking odd questions ? There seem to have been a few recently.

The answer is "yes" and "but with difficulty", you can apply online from yougov I believe
