I dictate a lot of dictation that I email to my typist. I've been using a digital Olympus dictation machine for years but its packed up and I've bought a new one. However instead of the files being in an Olympus audio format like the old machine the new machine records them as MP3 and they are over twice the size and it's real bh emailing them.

How can I save the files in another format, and what format should I try to use?

I used to use switch file converter. I think it was free, or a pittance. Easy to use, quick and no problems.

I would have though you would get away with reducing the bitrate of the mp3 files, rather than converting them. (In general, converting mp3 to another format is not ideal because of the lossy nature of mp3 but as it is just dictation you should be ok).

I use Foobar2000 for all my audio conversion and it is free and does the job.

Why email them? Why not use dropbox or similar and just save them in to a shared directory?

Google Drive, Onedrive or Dropbox seems to be the answer.

No-one wants megabytes of files in their email...
