Update

Next Saturday I pick up ls3 heads, valve train, modified intake, and cam from Gelf.

Saturday after the engine is going to knight engine services for machining.

I'll probably get the short block assembled there too. They will be able to size pistons, bearings and so on. Plus I don't have piston ring compressors, ring files etc.

Now I just need, gaskets, injectors, lifters, lifter trays, oil pump, water pump, core plugs, barbell restrictor...

Before the engine goes back in I'll take off the LPG stuff. Clean up the engine bay, treat the rust on chassis rails, probably get a hose kit. Could do with a nice air intake too.

Then I can look at air con repair, clutch, steering rack, box, prop, diff, brakes, suspension and finally bodywork.

I must be mad.

Yes you more than likely are wink But to us on here, you are quite sane! I suspect there has been a bit of man maths going on to justify this whistle Good luck, look forward to seeing the results

Unless you have no parts and are starting with a bare brand new block...a lot of those are not necessary. And other than head gaskets, almost all LS gaskets are re-usable unless they're damaged.

But no need for new lifter trays, water pump, core plugs or even to touch the barbell whether they're cheap or not.

If you do replace some of those, use proper GM and not cheaper parts....otherwise yow will be downgrading from what you have whether they are old or not !

The staining and bottom image would suggest the block is cracked ?

Not really something easily fixable other than another block. I would doubt even a normal attempt at a new liner would be considered safe for that

Either an old LS1 or LS6 block would be a direct and easy swap if you can find one, or an older iron block.

Get over onto the FB page

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1375847329333903/?...

And you might find some, or other upgrading to LS3 etc who may then have their old engine.

An awkward situation to be in, although you could move to an LS2 onwards block with a suitably built engine

Yeah it's goosed.

Looking down the water jacket the block is cracked at least as long as the crack in the liner.

Soon to be a coffee table.

I'm not sure of the best way forward now

I'm on that group so I'll post up

Not sure why, but I thought you were on an LS1/6 block...

LS2 blocks are still available

If you go for a new block may as well go ls3.

LS3 short motor would be an option, but he would need his crank wheel changed to a 24x.

Or Yes, LS3 block and rebuild what he has with his crank/rods and new pistons

Is it just the 1 cylinder cracked, or is there more than 1 ? Presumably the cylinder with clean pistons too ?

Well. Rebuilding and improving is out of the window!

I've just got home in my new LS1 VXR biggrin

I can't seem to shift what's left of the other car so I'm breaking for parts frown

Congrats on the new purchase! What's made you return to a 5.7 VXR? Seems a lot more 6.0 litre cars to choose from.
Was it one of those on Autotrader?
I also had LS2 VXR, but now have a LS1 VXR. Liked the idea of owning the rarest version, having a massive boot and a much fairer tax bill.

Nice one mate! Ping me a message when you have an idea what's being moved on from the old car.
