two things here....

1. is nobody reaaaallly going to pick up on the comment above.... I mean maybe I am the only childish one on here but....

"my wife hasn’t heard me come or go if I ease the throttle."

2. This is actually making me genuinely sad and pissed off again at how bad value living in London is. Sounds like being on a terrace is really going to stop this from being an option now. No way I could bring myself to buy one with the standard exhaust, unless someone can convince me otherwise.
its just the cold starts early in the morning that maybe an issue. On a sports exhaust with straight through pipes there's not a lot you can really do, as I've said before my car literally explodes into life.
However when the engine is hot the tick over sound is not offensive in anyway, it just has a ( nice to me ) mellow tone...blub..blub..blub..blub sound as it gently rocks from side to side.....sadly some people don't like that sort of thing.

Also are we talking equally about Monaro and R8?

Will a standard exhaust on a monaro be ok?

Interested in peoples experiences as I guess I could get a standard exhaust and then upgrade it when we move
Standard is quiet if that is what you want. It defeats the object of buying a V8 in my opinion - you can get something that releases some of the thrum without annoying the neighbours without sounding like a cammed beast that eats children.

My car was a standard 05 Monaro when I bought it. Back then it was very quiet, you would have no issues with a car like that.
I later fitted a Magnaflow cat back which has dual a 2.5 dia system and an x pipe. This was obviously louder on a cold start but I wouldn't say it was anti social in the noise department.
Later still I fitted headers and sports cats, that's when the cold start noise becomes an issue.
Like a child I later fitted QTP electric cut outs which are at the rear of my car near the back axel. If I open these up they bypass the rear boxes and are very anti social. They are fun for about 5 mins on a back road for that NASCAR sound track, then they give me a headache.
Some people fit their cutouts at the front of the car just after the cats.....mega loud!!!!!
To make things more awkward not all exhaust systems sound the same, Wortec are loud and Walkinshaw a bit quieter. You will probably have to hear each car on a cold start to make your mind up. It's never straight forward I'm afraid.

The maloo , i have the standard exhaust with both mid resonators removed , then i’ve changed the back boxes , it came with bimodal but i put an over ride switch in , i bought two straight through back boxes , got a silencer and a cut out welded in on each side , it’s now a quiet non offensive v8 rumble or open the bypass and it’s about 3 times louder , there are louder systems out there but it’s the best of both worlds , and on a long run it’s very quiet , you could do similar on a monaro but the only downside you normally need electric cut outs which are prone to failure in our lovely uk weather , my older ute i went single pipe cat back , with a cut out , not that loud till cut out was open

can you start these cars quietly without pissing off your neighbours. I live on a terraced street in London and often leave at 6am,
You must be the only Londoner who gives a 5hi7 about their neighbours .
Don't worry, no one will care about your car over the sound of all the sirens. Its not Rural Oxfordshire, a bit of noise is usual for London.

I have note writing neighbours, and I really do not want to become the focal point of their attention!

I can completely understand that to be honest.
You solution to me is a simple one. Buy either a Monaro or VXR8 with the standard exhaust still fitted.
If you hate the tail pipes because they look too small, then literally just get the tips changed. Then get the electric cut outs fitted which bypass the silencers at the touch of a button so you have standard quiet and full Nascar at your leisure.

I live in S.E. London and I've got a Wortec exhaust that is loud all the time.
The only remark I've had is from my next door neighbour who occasionly says " You was up early this morning go anywhere nice"

I did a back box swap for a set of Pypes Violator boxes i had shipped over from the states, louder then standard but not enough to annoy the neighbours

It’s OK and produces a nice noise in my opinion, but I agree with selym below – it defeats the point about buying a V8.

That’s what I’d love to achieve too but as yet undecided about the best course to take.

I’ve thought about cut-outs. Love the idea of split personality with it being the quiet dad-mobile one minute (I’ve got 2 young kids still in car seats), then the full-on NASCAR experience the next. But your comment about them being fun in short doses seems to be a common comment made about them and that puts me off. Plus the roads where I live are subjected to a lot of salt/grit over winter so I suspect electric ones wouldn’t work too long on mine…

I didn't mean to put you off anything, and that's the trouble with this sort of thing, they are down to personal opinion really.
You have done the right thing by asking questions from the people who actually own these cars, but you really need to hear them and take note of the modifications made.
You are also correct about the electric exhaust flaps. They do need to be used or they will seize up. I actually keep mine clean and spray them with WD40 now and again.
However, my car isn't used in winter so salty roads aren't an issue, mind you I did use it for one winter......never again!!!! it almost ended in tears and a big pile of scrap!!!!

Thanks for the info. Nope, didn't put me off at all. TBH I already know cutouts are unlikely to be for me, especially with mine being used year-round (fully Dinitrol'd not long after I bought it!). Hoping to get along to the national meet next weekend where I hope I'll see/hear a few in person, as online videos can only tell you a small amount about the noise. I've got a local(ish) fabricator with a good reputation plus I'm only a few hours from AAS, but I'm certainly not rushing into anything given the £££ involved.

Got my winter wheels and tyres sorted for this year so planning to keep it sunny side up!

Only really use it at weekends, living and working in London public transport is best. You should try driving and finding somwhere to park in London it will drive you mental.
It generally gets filled every other week.

No thanks, I can imagine as I lived in Sydney (suburbs) and worked in the cbd, train and bicycle only for me.
