I was coming back from castle motors in Cornwall last weekend, when a valve spring let go.
I am now the owner of one destroyed engine.
A well known garage has quoted me £10,000 for a new LS3.
Does anybody on here know where I can get one, not the corvette or Camaro as they
are different apparently.
Gutted my pride and joy owned her from new 2008.

And an LS3 is different too. There are literally hundreds of differences with all the varying LS setups, that doesnt mean dozens of them could not be usable.

So exactly what model do you have, and do you know the actual extent of the damage yet ? ie has the engine been removed and anything taken apart ?

A broken spring leading t a dropped valve can cause substantial damage, this does not mean a lot of what you have cannot be rebuilt.

Speak to someone like Crag at Dynotorque in Birmingham

The engine is out and the heads have been taken off.
The piston has gone into the valve and the conrod has gone out the side of the block.
scrape basically.

What about contacting this chap who I know, he as a LS2 6ltr specially built using hi spec parts, its only done 1,000 miles incuding bench run the only reason for sale is that some one crashed into his Monaro VXR and it was wrote off. No damage to engine area.
He is wanting £5.000 ONO.( cost £7,000 to build)

Contact him on 01485 535256 or 07901 977321 mention that I gave you info then he knows you wont be a time waster.

Hope all goes well for both of you.

Yep, that's substantial lol.

Cheapest route would be find a matching 6.0 iron engine, although it comes with a weight penalty.

But there will be many repair/build options. If yours uses the later 58x crank trigger then that will make an LS3 slightly more viable, albeit with tuning and some wiring mods...and a new intake and some other small parts.

Any LS2 built option or iron block will of course be easiest for a direct swap.

Anything’s possible. Mine came with an LS1 but it’s got a modified LSA in it now. It’s also had an LQ9 truck engine in it.

Labour rates is the killer in these situations so a drop in crate engine is probably the cheapest way to get it running.

How come the valve Spring failed?
As you've had the car since new, I would be thinking how much longer are you going to keep it?
If it's a keeper I would go fo a slightly uprated crate engine. Something that would drop in without out any mods, or very few, but still be an improvement over stock.
I feel sorry for your predicament, I would be pretty much devastated if I had an engine blow up on me.
Best of luck

I don't know why the spring has failed, I am waiting on the garage to give me more info.
The car has done 75,000 miles has always been serviced on time by Monkfish.
I did have magic cams and exhaust fitted by MF.
The last 6 years I have only been doing 3000 miles per year.
I have thought about selling her several times, but when you don't drive her for a month to six
weeks and then get in and fire her up (insert smiley face here don't know how to do that) I am hooked all over again.
It is a hell of a lot of money to spend when the car is only worth £16000, but if I don't the car is only worth scrap.

I really sympathise. When I blew mine up spectacularly at Bruntingthorpe I could have cried. I’m so glad I didn’t scrap it, I’d take a deep breath and look at it as an opportunity. Sounds like the Monkfish cam needed updated springs.

The delemma you have is if you scrap the car, how much will it cost for a replacement?
If you keep the car how much are you going to have to spend to get the car on the road?
Then finally what will be the market value of the car when fixed?
The bottom line, is either way you are in a bit of a bind? after a few whiskeys you might come up with an answer!!!!!!
If it was my car ( here we go again ) I would have to put if back in my garage until I could afford a crate engine...I really couldn't scrap my car.....I'm rather attached to my old steed!!!!
I'm not much help, but I feel your pain.

If it were a Monaro, it'd be worth a lot for just the parts, not just scrap, most of them have to come from the USA or Australia. Even little things like light cluster clips are unavailable.

Being a 2008, I presume it's a VXR8 (?) so perhaps this is also the case. I sympathise but a replacement engine is probably worth it, unless you put feelers out there about selling it with a kaput engine. For a smiley or a frowny, (without using the link above the editor) it's just colon followed by a left or right bracket, frown

If it's an 08, it's more likely to be a LS3 ?

Or certainly have the 58x so an LS3 crate replacement may well make a sensible choice.

£5k for a used LS2 someone mentioned is a hefty asking price though. LS prices just seem to get higher and higher for some reason.

As I understood it, the LS3 engine wasn't used until late 2009 (?). I presume the OP just fancies the idea of using a 6.2 litre LS3 since the 6.0 litre LS2 has been lunched.

With the expected cost, could a Corvette or Camaro engine not be used with some fettling? If it's only the transmission or ancillaries etc.

LS3 would be a good upgrade in most regards anyway, and a new crate with warranty isnt a bad idea.

Exact same thing happened to my R8 about 4 years ago (mine was an LS3), as i'm in North East England i had mine shipped up to AAS in Newcastle where they took the old broken engine out and replaced it with a brand new crate motor from Partsworld, the bill came to a little over £6k all-in if i remember right..
