Now then folks.

As some of you may know, I’ve been back in a Monaro again since last summer, and like most of us, looking at the next mod(s) biggrin

Now, one of the things I really miss, going from a VZ to a V2/VY, is the binnacle atop the dash with oil pressure and voltage gauges. So I’ve been looking at a few solutions, but was wondering how straightforward it would be to do?

I’ve found a suitable binnacle that standard 52mm gauges fit, and I’ve got a background in electrical engineering (although not auto electrics!)

Any advice is most welcome smile

Hello Micheal,

I'm pretty sure you will need either a purpose made wiring loom to solder into the vehicle harness or find a good auto electrician who can make one up for you, hopefully without causing any strange electrical maladies.
Sadly I doubt there will be any plug and play factory wiring hidden away.
Tha good news is you can buy some quality instruments that are accurate, unlike the factory stuff which probably isn't.

I know that this has definitely been done before.
You'll need to run a wire and tap a sender in to a blank plate near the filter for the oil pressure.
I'd think the voltmeter would be much easier and you could tap into any ignition on live.
Try a general search maybe 'Monaro gauges'.

Fit a pair of Aeroforce scan gauges, they work off the OBD. Dead easy, also useful for scanning and resetting fault codes smile

Does this apply to the early car though?

Aeroforce gauges are available for both model variants and when they're working they're great but I'm on my 2nd set now and these are starting to play up in the same way as the previous set did at about 2 1/2 years old .. not good considering they cost £400+ landed in the UK. When these pack up I'm replacing them with old school mechanical gauges.

i did this with the saas gauges . but one is now faulty so ive got vdo gauges to fit now.
most of the wiring ie voltmeter and lighting can be tapped into the radio wiring
but as mentioned above i fitted a sensor into the blank plate next to the oil filter and you need a single wire from there to the gauge

Thanks for the replies chaps, plenty of food for thought there.

Regards the Aeroforce ones, as handy as they are, I think I prefer the more traditional looks of analogue gauges, so I’d imagine I’d get something that looks similar to stock. Although I do like the style and font of Autometer!

Bear in mind the signals for oil pressure etc are all electronic, reported to the ECU hence obd being so much easier. I’m not sure what will happen if you try to piggyback on existing sensors, probably confuse your ECU into throwing fault codes so you’ll need to fit an alternate sensors to power other gauges which is a pain imho although not impossible. My Aeroforce gauges have been on my car since about 2010 and they still work although I don’t use the car that much.
