oil change

My car is due an oil change next week, it was changed 12 months ago and has only covered 5ooo miles.
The oil in the engine is Royal Purple, and it still looks OK, i.e not black.
So the question is how long can you leave the oil before it degrades too much?
The reason I ask is that great claims are made about oil these days,so why can't you get a couple of years of normal driving out of it?

Well if your car is anything like my Monaro VXR it slowly goes through the oil in the engine quicker than it can degrade.

Chances are that you will have to top it up before it gets bad.

yeah tis true. Think the dipstick mark is only one litre. Mine burns off that amount about every 800 to 1000 miles.

I have done 13k in last year and it never needed topping up between oil changes

i can't see why everyone is obsessed with royal purple oils they are no better or no whorse the mobile one but are more money

Agreed,like most things, a few it will have made a difference, they then tell everyone else, why for some reason seem to get the placebo effect, everyone THINKS it's better, any high grade synthetic oil is fine for the car, theres nothing RP know about than all the other oil companies out there don't, Mobil included as long as they are blended from the best esters, then all is good, BTW, i have a pal who does just that for an oil company, blend oils, and has done for years, so i tend to listen to what he says.

If Royal Purple is the same as any other oil, how can it perform better in test's and why don't other oil manufacturer's challenge Royal Purples claims?
As for oil consumption my engine has never needed a top up between servicing, I thought only tuned motors used extra oil.

RP, and some other oils for that matter are Ester based (Silkolene is another which I personally use). Mobil 1 is not fully Ester based IIRC but PAO based.
There is research to say that the Ester based oils offer better film strength, temperature resistance and therefore better protection.

Oil consumption will vary between engines, but from what i've read the LS2's can suffer more due to the low friction piston rings that were fitted to reduce drag and increase power.

And who knows how good their oil is as very few of us take our engines to pieces to inspect it !!

from what i've read in the us they tend to go with what the car makers recommend which on mine said mobil 1 and would prefer to listen to them becouse there the ones who build the engines and spent millions of dollars doing so

True but ive never known a manufacturer spend that little bit extra to put a better part on when a slightly cheaper one will just say pass the requirements they have.

i work on cars all day as thats my job we work on all sorts of cars from high performance
to your every day shopping car, i have read all bumf about diffrent oils, we do a lot of taxis the ones who use the proper oil that the car makers recomend seem to come to us a lot less then the ones who want to use diffrent oils, i'am not slagging of royal purple
but i can't find any reason to swop and royal purple is not the best to use on the diffs of either a holden like mine or the monaro its to thick

Thats why in the diffs etc its mixed with a friction modifier when used on these cars.

It very much depends on the car/engine, some engines require a specific all to run correctly and are made with that oil others dont, the fact he majority of ppl on here use the stuff even those with highly tuned cars and the biggest tuner in the u.k recommends it that does enough for me to use the stuff.

I used fully synthetic in my landcruiser and had no end of problems with oil leaks around the engine, so never used it again, I have used Mobil 2000 in both the LC and the Ro and pretty good for my standard engine.

If you have an R8, stick in some RP and watch the temp drop compared to mobil1. Not marketing hype, just what happens.

Sounds good & good enough for me.....

I've got Valvoline Full Synthetic in the G8 right now, with a Mobil 1 oil filter. But my next oil change will be at Monkfish with Royal Purple Full Synthetic oil and hopefully the 10-48 Royal Purple oil filter....

Well given that you have just changed mine last week I'll take a look and see what difference it makes - as I notice mine gets high when giving it some welly.

my holden has mobil 1 does not get hot temp is where it should be even when going faster then i should be

Same here, My Ro doesnt burn a drop of oil and I drive my Ro like i nicked it.

Maybe bouncing off the rev limiter isnt a bad thing after all.

But i never boot the engine until the engine is up to temp, i think thats were most engines burn oil.

I think id be woried if my Ro used 1 liter every 1000 miles
