6 years on, and thanks G...it was still a pig of a job (clearly designed for assembly, not disassembly), but I got there in the end without breaking any clips. Not helped by two of the three screws on the slam panel refusing to come out in one piece even after penetrating fluids and with an impact gun (ultimately removed using every trick I have 
). Given my car has only forty-something thousand miles, I'd take the chance to grease those bolts if yours still look easily extracted, before they become part of the slam panel like mine!
Paint on order, I'll treat the rust and give the slam panel a spritz while it's apart...
