I could do with some advice on the differences between catalytic converters. My car is ready for a new set but the difference in price from the cheapest to the most expensive is pretty vast. They start at 70 and go up to 400.
So has anyone got any advice on which ones to get? Cheers.

The cheaper cats are usually 400 cell per square inch ceramic matrix cats. Originals are 200 cpsi metal matrix iirc. They're less restrictive and handle higher temps, as well as the occasional knock without the matrix cracking/shattering.

My car came with a set of them for MOT time, not wanting a discussion with the police I fitted them permanently. Of course permanently actually became rather temporarily when they blocked up. I fitted a replacement set which again clogged quickly before I got a 2nd hand original set which is going fine. There's no need for originals, a set of generic 200cpsi cats with the correct fittings welded on should work.

Would the 400cpsi cats be ok for a 4.2 then? I ask because the ones at Racetech are described as high flow 400 cpsi and the ones at Tvrparts don't say what they are rated at.

I've got a 4.2 so not sure. I've since binned my cheap cats or I'd post up a photo of the cheap and expensive cores side by side to double check the size difference isn't just in a my head but I'm sure the TVR originals have larger cells than the cheap ones.

The 400 cats aren't that cheap, they are on offer at 255 plus vat and p&p each. That's why I just assumed they would be ok. Glad I didn't just buy them straight away.

Has anyone got an original 4.2 200 cpsi cat they want to sell?

I wonder if a couple of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180826654167 and a local exhaust fabricator could do the job?

That could definitely be an option. I managed to get 1 unused original cat so if I could find another that would be great. Cheers for the link.

Hi

Can anyone confirm that the original Cat is only 200 Cell? I was under the impression that it was 400 cell to meet MOT nox limits.

By the way what is the NOX limits for a 1996 model? Is it difficult to achieve?

need to jumo onto this old forum´s-thread:

i´m searching also 2 new cats as the former owner decided to replace only 1 cat, therefore the car came to me with 2 different sized cats.

one looks still original from 1997, i have decided to fit 2 new cats.

but now comes the question: are the ones in the usual TVR webstores E-Marked or the replacement ones from EEC? as i need the cats to be marked.

Not wanting to jump in and cause offence. Posting as it Seems I’m unable to message you direct. I’ve got a late 4.2 (2004) with a 4.5 bottom end. My cats are pretty much shot. I’d be in the market for a new set. Perhaps PM me? Cheers

meanwhile i´m in contact with several webshops and cat-manufacturers in UK:

most cats on the market are non-type approved and it should be the end-users problem if he takes the risk or not.
this said, the end-user may use the car not on public roads, instead only on the Track.

several suppliers did cancel my orders "we do not supply our non-type approved cats outside UK, even not within UK when the car is registered after 2001"

what is going on in the world? everbody is scared and affraid of sanctions....they all go through life in fear. how narrow meanwhile the corridor of freedom became?

Might be worth contacting ACT. I think they advertise Two types of cat.

i´m the consumer ...so i decide what cat i need.....and not the supplier!!! its a1997 car and therefore i would not need a type approved cat in UK....so, if i want to buy a non-type approved cat its my problem.

i´m really shocked that even automitive suppliers are meanwhile politcally conditionated and perfectly play the came of "narrowing the freedom-corridor"
