Hi there,

I am considering selling my Caterham Supersport r and getting something more suitable to longer drives around scotland. Previously my track usage was more than road but that balance has moved to doing more road trips etc.

Caterham has been great but no stereo, ear plugs, and a hankering after something a little more usable has made me consider selling up.

Immediate thoughts were lotus of some sort however I have always loved tamora's/T350 and I'm thinking a tamora could be an option.

However, fragility is one thing that concerns me as I would still do the odd track day and sprint/hillclimb in it.

Am I worrying unnecessarily?

I see there is an Ls2 engined one for sale just now that looks nice but that would be no use for sprints as wouldn't comply with class regs. I know nothing about the speed 6 engine though!

Cheers,

Dave

Owner of just over a year here - no doubt some longer tenured fellas will offer some thoughts later but...

Engine needs a good old warm up (70 degrees) before hanging on to the RPMs

Handling is superb - not Lotus Elise level but that is to be expected give 40% more weight

Rebuild is great and even better if done by Powers or Str8six - some none rebuilds will be fine i'm sure but more of a risk

My car felt light over 100mph so get a full geo set up done (IMO)

I am about to drive mine back to Berlin from London and have no doubt i will enjoy every minute (wouldnt say the same about my lotus or my noble in days gone by!!)

My last Elise was 970 kilos, our Tamora is just over 1000. Not sure where the 40% comes from...

Both fun.

Suspect you’ll enjoy a Tamora.

Hi Dave,

I have found my Tamora anything but fragile with no real weaknesses and I think they are the performance bargin of the moment. A great balance of performance, braking, comfort, open top simplicity, rarity and handling on a par with any Lotus I've driven. My only slight niggle is a lack of low down torque in my 3.6 around town or in traffic, but when the revs rise on the move things happen quickly. Getting one with a good engine rebuild (Str8six did mine), clutch change, engine mounts & suspension etc etc is a must, as with any performance car unless you want to invest your money and a lot of time getting it done. I also think aircon is a must for roof on days on the road. I love it, SWMBO doesn't (too loud). Win, win.

I should clear over 20k from selling caterham and trailer and can add a it without getting in too much trouble from the boss! Had a budget of 25k in my head (give or take).

Thanks for the value add comment - S1 Elise is 740kg - okay maths is a bit out but assuming 1100kg curb weight of tamora with fluids we arent too far away are we...

Yeah, series 2 Elise piled on the pounds biggrin Big percentage gain over the S1 version.

There were a good number of Tamora's for sale at one point this year but they have slowly gone or been withdrawn.

If £25k is your budget then the Target Cars one could be yours for £16. Deliver to Dom from an inspection and engine rebuild (£8k budget).

Add £1.5k for a suspension refresh and set up.

You should then have a reliable solid car.

Interior is a bit rough but deal with that next year.

It could be that Dom finds no issue with the engine. So money for interior refresh.

Have you considered a Tuscan? Both a hardtop and convertible in one. Few more around to choose from.

I used to love the tuscan but now find them slightly awkward looking and much prefer the look of tamora and T350 for some reason.

I like cars to be a little bit scary (ie. I'm not really interested in something like a TTRS that will be fast cross country but safe). I'm known for hanging the back end out in the Caterham from time to time (read. most of the time) so this was one thing that had put me off the likes of an exige (which seemed like the initial choice).

TVR itch has been around for a LONG time so maybe this could be the perfect time to scratch it!

If I didn't have my three projects on the go and looking for a tinkering T car project. Then I would be heading off to Target Cars.

Not trying to be clever, just pointing out another perspective (not very well).

Not all Elise’s are light.

I don’t disagree with your sentiment. 111S vs Tamora with AC, close to 50% more weight.

Late Elise with AC vs Tamora with no AC not much in it.

...if you're a driver, you can't go wrong with a Tamora. Less than 600 out there, unique design and a real sportscar.

I had the exact same thoughts as you. I went from Caterham 7 style car to a Tamora for my 2nd car.

I find I use the Tamora a lot more because it's much more usable, warm and comfortable. And faster just in a different way. I have an hours journey to work including a lot of motorways. It was just not appealing in the 7 so I didn't do it very often. I love it in the Tam.

I try not to take it out in the wet but if you do it's not a huge problem like it was in the 7. The roof is great, it's watertight and the wipers actually work!

I have had the Tam for roughly 5 years now and never had a problem with it. It's never broken down. Needed very little work doing to it. One of the most reliable cars I've owned. Although it has had an engine rebuild (before my time).

Do it you won't look back. I went for the Tamora just because I still wanted open top motoring on occasion. It is also better than money in the bank. It's an investment. My car has increased in value since I bought it.
