Hi

Does anyone keep their cars elevated during storage? If so, any advice, options and photos please.

Thanks

I do too. Griffith on the top of the four post lift, Tamora below (or visa-versa). Both on battery conditioners and with covers. On their wheels but chocked with wood instead of handbrakes.

Not the best picture but:

I’d be keen to know which lifts you are both using and how much space you needed.

Do these lifts give good access to the underside of the car? Just wondering if they essentially double as a spannering aid as well as storage.

I believe that is their primary design function, using them for double decker storage is a bonus.

Yes you can work on them . However it does depend on the height available in your garage. I can work under mine ( im currently in the process of fitting a Subaru power steering rack) but I use a workshop wheeled stool as I find it an easier working height. Im not able to put the lift up to its full height with the car on because my garage has roof beams in the way. I used axle stands before so I say from experience this is still a 100% better solution even if slightly compromised. In addition I have freed up the other floor space on the other side of the garage, I did however then fill it with 5 Motorbikes !

This is about as high as mine goes but its still enough room to work on it.

Can you tell me the floor area & height you had to work with please, it looks like a standard double garage. Im considering one in my double garage and would like to have a real life reference.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the replies.

Do these 4 post systems lock out as well so not reliant on the hydraulics?

Also, is it recommended to raise the car off the wheels (if poss)? Contemplating something like this:

Yes they lock out. held up not by hydraulics, otherwise creep could be an issue for the car under it. I will measure floor area later.

About 5.5M x 5M. Height wise you need 2.7 m to get it as high as mine but the higher the better. What dimensions have you got.

This is what I thought you were originally talking about.

My understanding is that for long term storage you need to lift the car so the tyres are off the ground, as tyre damage can result otherwise.

Some suspension doesnt like being on full droop for storage either. Best bet is to have a cheap set of wheels /tyres for storage. you can then put your ones in dark storage to reduce UV damage to the tyres.

Submitting plans for a triple 3m height garage shortly.

Tam will be 1.8m up on a 4 post lift.

I'll be grinning like a bastid.

Several months, probably? I've never seen a figure. However, I've heard it's relevant in the context of putting a car in storage over the winter months.

That's handy. The oil dripping from the Tiv stops the Mazda from rusting... wink
