Tyres

I'm looking at getting some new tyres for the Sag. Has anyone gone for Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersports and if so what's the verdict? I was close to buying Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5's as I had Asymmetric 3's on my Tuscan a number of years ago and found them pretty good.

The car is only used on (our appalling) roads and not tracked. Just wondered whether the Supersports are more track orientated so maybe not suitable.

I,ve used Assymetric 5's on a different car and found the side walls quite stiff. Have you thought about Uniroyal Rainsport 5's.

I've replaced my original Goodyear's with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5's and very happy with them. I looked at Supersports too, but couldn't identify any advantage for road and occasional track use.

hi what sizes are you going for ? i currently have rather old 225 x40 on the front and 255x35 on the rear , thinking same on the front and 245 x 40 on the rear ?

The Sag has 255/35's on both axles as standard.

Yes - mine currently has 255x35's all round and I'll be replacing them with the same.

Check your insurance. Many insurers demand you fit exactly the same size as came with the car. On mine that is 255/35 ZR18 all round (although the front and rear rims have different offsets. Because TVR.)

strange I am on 255/35 18 (Yokohama) all round, what diameter did they come with?

Apologies, it was a typo on my part which I have now corrected. I meant 255/35 ZR18

What did you go for in the end, PJC?

I'm in a similar situation with my Sag, and I too am trying to decide between F1 Asymmetric 5 and F1 Supersport.

Good call to use a mobile fitter, as you can hover over them and make sure they jack at exactly the correct jacking points, and also ensure they don't accidentally swap rims front to back.

Yep, the guy is a one man band from a village near me. He has worked on a number of my cars now so there is a level of trust there. Not quite the cheapest but only by £20 or so for all four so well worth it for the peace of mind. Jacked it up with a piece of rubber between the jack saddle and the chassis triangulation points

Hi - I never got round to changing tyres as too busy at work. The current Toyo Proxes have plenty of tread left but they’re over six years old so I’ll get them done in a couple of months. Definitely going for the Goodyears.

I have some arriving next week to replace my Toyos which are now a bit old.

Hopefully they will get a good drive and I can provide feedback here.

I'm running Michelin Pilot Sport 4S on my Golf R and have found them pretty good (although the ride quality is a little harsher than the Nexen N'Fera SU1 that came with the car) and I chose them because they won the EVO Tyre of the Year in the exact same size and pretty much the same car (a Mk7.5 GTi compared to my Mk7 R).

However, the Sport 4S is not available in 255/35 ZR18 and the only option is the less sporty Sport 4 (as in non-S). But they are still good tyres and may be perfectly fine.

To be honest, any of the premium tyres available would probably be fine.

I have the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 on my Sag, but I too will need to change them soon due to age / signs of cracking. They are date stamped as 1516, so Apr 2016. The oroginal Goodyear Eagle F1s lasted longer but were hard and lost grip, but had less cracking for their age.

As noted, the MPS4S is not available in the size, but there is a Super Sport TPC option now appearing on blackcircles - I have run these in the past on other cars (though not 'TPC'). I thought Super Sports were replaced altogether now by the 4S?
