Black Ops - Fiction or Reality
Discussion
Having been to Le Mans for the last few years (since 2006) our group has been wondering about the reality of the so-called Black Ops escapades to unofficial viewing points to the south of the circuit. We obviously dont want to put ourselves or anyone else in danger or cause any kind of 'issue'. We have camped at Beausajour and have considered (usually after a few 1664's) whether a foray into rural france could see us with a perfect spot. Is this just drunken fantsay? Could we be thrown out of the event? Would we just be wasting valuable hours of the race?
ZS and I have done it We made it to the side of the mulsanne straight but to be honest I dont think its worth it, it took us bloody ages to work our way out the back of Beausejour camp site then cut 'unseen' across woodland getting bitten to death by mosquitoes in the early hours of the morning. Your better off just enjoying the race from the grandstand areas and watching the cars going in and out of the pits We did it just to say 'We Did It'
You can get yourself into some pretty good positions on that part of the circuit without needing to worry about le Plod I think.
I’d advise getting down to the two eating establishments at Hunaudières where normally you can satnd on a table or hang out of awindow and watch the first part of Mulsanne pretty easily.
That said if you do park up around there and did happen to wander off and get lost you may just find some very fast moving objects in the vicinity

Getting trackside between Arnage and the Porsche curves is def. possible from both sides of the track (and is a relatively easy walk too).
Last year a group of us actually stood with the marshalls at one spot for a while, they were cool as long as we stayed back. Then we went across a field and spent 30 mins sat just behind the armco. Brilliant!
Not sure if it's still true, but access from Beausejour was possible with a bit of thought a couple of years ago too.
People don't tend to post exact spots/routes, it would spoil the fun it 100's of people were doing it together.

Do this every year I've been, It's one of the highlights for me. Each year it's a different spot, you've got to discover your own and keep it discreet.Last year we bumped into some doctor/firebrigade staff who ended up chatting with us, sitting behind the Armco and shared a cup of tea. Bit bizarre having warm tea at 2am as cars go past at 220mph behind you, but that's what I love about the race.
Year before we got tangled in an electric fence getting to the track. Ahh memories....

if you go to the very end of BSJ the metal gate at the very back has had its lock cut off. from there you get onto a country lane I always turn right and head down to arnage ish way some great viewing down there. But its a secret so keep it too yourself
Been using that location for getting to unaccessible parts of the circuit for the last few years.Great for getting to the inside of Indy corner. Last year though IIRC they replaced the padlock . Still did not stop us though. Another place is on the inside of the straight just before the 2nd chicane ,you come across a field after a trek through some woods . At the end of the field are 2 houses which are right up by the armco, we go in-between them . Awesome spot. We use Mad Friday to do a recce with the aid of Google maps. This year going to try and get to the 1 st chicane on the inside of the circuit or on top of the Leroys building....;) we made it down to the straight of all straights last year somehow! As you all seem to be saying, certainly motivated by the above average beer/blood ratio!
It was brilliant (and very loud!)
I was impressed with the positioning last year, but wouldnt mind making it to a corner, and set up shop for the night!!

definitely not fictional.
would prefer not to say where we go though - the point of true black ops is that its undetected, which can be quite difficult when lots of people go to the same spot.
got told off in 2009 when we made it on to the mulsanne straight. the marshalls on the other side of the track spotted us but were helpless to do anything other than radio for their friends on our side of the circuit. they couldn't find us (weren't looking in trees) and only spotted us as we started the walk back to camp. all very good natured banter with them but to be fair I can't blame them for not being fans of black ops - at the end of the day it can be very dangerous.

we were really lucky in the mid eighties to be able to get to the "hump" on the mulsanne straight during the night from the inside of the circuit, gettting across the golf course undetected, and right up to the armco,to see ...and hear the jags porsches et al going passed flat out at 240 mph feet away from us, was just something else, never seen anything like it, still get goosebumps thinking about it now,but having said that we'd not long been back to our tents, when everthing went quiet and we heard that one of the jags, win percy driving i think, had been playing pinball wizard between the armco barriers.....made you think twice about how dangerous it really had been......
Anything from Tetre Rouge down to Le Mans is pretty much off limits (couple of spots you can get to like the chinese restaurant and the hotel by the second chicane).
Mulsanne to Indianapolis is closed off, and then from Arnage up to the Porsche curves.
So basically all the areas where the cars are going flat out.
You can get a slight taste of that by standing in the car park end of the Mulsanne corner enclosure, but it's not the same as the cars going past you flat in top.

Mulsanne to Indianapolis is also closed off. Arnage is a good point to view the cars close up as that is the slowest corner, but then from Arnage up to the Porsche curves is also closed off.
