Good luck with the kumho. I had those on one of my old cars and quickly named them ditch finders. You'd have more cold grip driving on baking trays.
A good few years ago, Kumhos became very popular with Porsche 964 owners. People were raving about them - quality tyre at a bargain price etc. - so when I needed tyres, I bought Kumhos.Absolutely horrible - zero grip, and the back stepped out a few times at the merest hint of damp (which is a clever trick in a 4WD car).
My 964 had 16" wheels whereas virtually everybody elses (that I knew) had 17" - it seemed that the 17" tyre was very much better for some reason.
Personally, after my experience I wouldn't buy them again. The difference in price is pretty insignificant compared to the cost of me parking in a tree.

I agree 100%. The only time I ever had grip in them was on a warm track day at Castle Combe.... in those circumstances they were superb and I still came home with most of my tread. Any other driving they were awful. I was 22 at the time and they came bundled with my 17" alloys at the time.... never again.Absolutely horrible - zero grip, and the back stepped out a few times at the merest hint of damp (which is a clever trick in a 4WD car).

Are you talking about the Kumho KU39 or an earlier tyre?
I had Kumho Ecsta Ku31 on a Corrado a few years back, they were meh at best, but better than Yokohamas in the wet at least.
I have Kumho KU39 all round on my 911 996 now and find them almost as good as the used (came on wheels) Continentals they replaced and a world better than than the aged Pirelli PZeros the car came with.
I have absolutely no worries wet or dry with them as a road tyre. Maybe its the 911 weight of the engine but I never have unexpected lack of traction even in the wet- my 996 is an early '99 without ANY electronic traction control. On track they overheat quicker than the Continentals did, and are shown up a little, but thats maybe once a year for me.
They aren't as good as premium tyres, but they only cost me just over £300 for 4 and are a good road tyre.

Hi Ken - yes I remember. Can't make the McGurk's event but hoping to make it to one of the monthly meetings next year. How is the Rapide going? Mike
Excellent Mike - one of the chaps that posts here is the AMOC rep now so will be rejoining. Rapide had a PITA electrical hiccup start of the year but has been utterly fabulous for the rest of it. Now secondary decatted - sounds like THUNDER!!! :-)Gassing Station | Aston Martin | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
