Thanks Black9, I think I'm happy enough to replace the gear set, but does the panel just pop off, or do I need to unscrew something first. If it is just pop off, like the DB9, where should I apply the pressure, i.e. where are the fixing points? Don't want to break the whole piece.
No probs, it's the same as the DB9 to remove, I'll send you a link to download the workshop manuals.
I used a nylon fish slice works a greet with out damaging the panels, I used to use them to remove Sunseeker head lining panels, ALS the video that has been posted is a good guide.

Mine too has a bit of trouble popping up ( I sometimes have to give it a hand ! ) (Oo-err missus !)

It works, but sometimes does not go fully up, then goes down again on it's own. If I give it a shuve it's fine and stays up, but I'm not sure if it should go up further ?
That's what happened to our's and is due to the main gear being cracked, it will eventually stop working.

Thanks Black9, sounds a trip to tesco's for a fish slice and maybe a mullet.

Anyone know the part # for the dealer kit that fixes this issue? My dealer had no idea what the heck I was talking about and wanted me to buy a whole new unit.

Have them look up Service Bulletin SB0283, issued February 2009.

Dan, I'll post it up later when I get home. It was £6.53 inc VAT, which must make it the cheapest aston part.

I bought the same repair kit. $15 CAD delivered to Canada!

FYI: Don't attempt to open or close a satnav screen manually! You will surely damage the gears that drive the screen (the voice of experience speaking).

Regarding the YouTube video on removing the satnav panel........ It was by pure luck that the idiot in that video did not do expensive damage to the leather surrounding the fascia panel. Do not attempt to pry at the edges of the fascia panel in the way that fool did. If you do, chances are that you will damage the veneer and/or the leather on either side of the panel. There are other posts on how to remove the panel safely. Or at least, speak to an AM service technician.

2008 Vanage with Lazy Nav screen. Found the Aston repair kit and read Aston service Bulletin SB0283. Pulled the old gears out and swapped in the new gears. New and old looked identical but I followed instructions. After replacement same symptoms. Pulled the side cover off to better understand the mechanism. Theres a worm gear on the motor which turns a 2 piece white gear. The 2 gear pieces are coupled by a friction clutch backed up by a spring. The other gears in the assembly are just speed reduction. The purpose of the clutch is to prevent damage to the gears if manually closed. If the clutch slips at too low of a value the Motor can't lift the screen. My. two piece white clutch seems fine but I don't know the correct factory slip torque to be its defective. Thinking that oil/grease got on the friction surface I washer it with detergent and water. No measurable increase in slip torque. The rest of my assembly seems excessive friction free, ie no binding on the screen drive shaft. So my diagnosis is my 2 piece clutch gear slips and not a broken gear. I tried increasing the preload on the counter balance rotary spring and I can then get the Nav Screen to go up but slips on the way down so not an effective solution. I can't find a part number for the white 2 piece spring loaded friction gear

Anyone have any more info ?

This video shows replacing 2 of the gears which may have cracked. I previously bought the kit and replaced my unbroken old gears not understanding the mechanism at the time of replacement. My problem is with a slipping clutch not allowing motor torque to lift the screen.

I had exactly this issue, replaced the friction material with some emery paper and now works fine, I originally replaced with double sided tape which also works but effectively removes the protective feature of the slipper so if someone does force it closed bad things will happen...

Finally figured it out.

There are. two distinct problems which could cause a Nav Screen pop up problem on a Vantage and possible other models. One is broken gears. For this Aston makes an inexpensive replacement kit. Aston Service Bulletin SB0283. February 2009. There are directions available and videos on the web on how to replace.
My problem was a slippery clutch gear which allowed the motor to slip rather then lift the screen. This part is not available from Aston. The purpose of the clutch is to prevent gear damage if the screen is manually lifted or closed. Over time the designed "slip torque" become too low to function properly. The fix is to "clean" the two clutch friction surfaces with soap and a toothbrush. Mine had over time picked up the white plastic from the "flywheel" surface and reduced the coefficient of friction far enough that slippage would occur. There are 2 friction surfaces which are black as shown in the picture. This particular dissembled picture is after the part had been cleaned. If you've taken the unit apart, ordered the replacement gear kit but your gears aren't broken there's a good chance the clutch is the problem. One way to check is use your finger to turn the black input gear that the motor normally would turn. If the display rises, but then gets stuck and you see the clutch output and other gears not turning, this is the problem and fix.

To take apart the clutch twist the gears and pull it apart. Make note of the order and orientation of all clutch parts so you can properly assemble after cleaning. Press and twist to reassemble.

Good luck
