Being offered a few add-ons for the vantage since I bought it:

- Gap Insurance (pays out difference between invoice and insurance)
- Tyre Damage Cover (malicious damage, blowouts etc)
- Smart Insurance (scratches/dents/chips cover)
- Pureguard (Paint/Fabric Protection)

Anyone taken any of these out?

thanks smile

I took 3 yr GAP on my new S as it is return to invoice at £123k for £500 (worth while on a new car IMHO)
Didn't bother with tyre/alloy damage but was offered it
Same with Smart
I was offered pureguard but sourced and fitted more comprehensive Ventureshield for £800

They ain't add ons....... They're serious profit makers for the dealers..

Gap...... Ok if you have big finance outstanding.... But shop around, and you'll get better cover for a fraction of what the dealer wants

Tyre.... Waste of money.... Obviously doesn't cover the most likely cause of replacement...... Worn outhehe

Smart insurance........ I'd suggest that smart people would leave this...

Pure guard...... Far better to put the money towards a damn good detailing from someone like Paddy....

All IMO of course...

Thanks guys - thought as much - wasn't just me thinking about the $$'s in his eye's when he explained all these items to me hehe

Detailing definitely yes........I would like to get that done at some point. I'm not sure with detailing whether it's best to take it to detailer's premises or have them come to my home?

I guess Gap insurance suits some but the only one I've ever taken out is tyre damage, on my audi, when for about £4 I got 3 yrs of cover for both tyre & alloy refurb - on 21" wheels & tyres I thought it good value but they made a mistake on the quote (in my favour) !!!

Personally I think it really cheapens the whole buying experience of a car like this when they wheel out these options and instead of just accepting a 'no', in my experience start going through pros& cons etc - they should accept the 'no' much more easily

I was particularly offended when Broughtons tried selling me 'glasscoat' for £795. The same glasscoat that the audi dealer offered me on a larger car for £300 ! It's a stinking rip-off that does the dealer no service whatsoever and puts them in a particularly bad light. £30-50 off stuff, £20-50 of labour and a charge of £795 for something that's not even very good ! Three times they brought it up - as you can tell, I'm still angry about it

Instead I got one of the best detailers in the country to visit (Richard Tipper, Perfection Valet) and he charged about £500 for a very full job that of course is not the same as glasscoat, but includes a full wax on top of the correction etc

I was typing my reply when others were doing the same thing - how nice to have consensus for once !

And my wheel/tyre insurance cost me £400, not £4 !!! Still worked out well, but as I say, because it was misquoted for the wheel size. It includes up to 5 wheel refurbs over the life of the policy

I'd argue a detail/wax is just about more comparible to pureguard/glasscoat than ventureshield (I think we both did both detail & film as it happens, IIRC Mikey ?) but it does just show what a rip-off it is when an actual film can be had for £800 (not on the whole car, but on all the important bits) and a coating which offers a tiny fraction of the same kind of protection is similar money......

Detailing WILL NOT do the same thing as Ventureshield (but I suspect Pure Guard is a resin coat rather than polymer film)

I took GAP on mine even though I have no finance on it because if it gets written off in the first three years I will get back in to a brand new car what ever the insurance give for it as a used car.

The other two are a waste of time I agree.

I meant glasscoat/pureguard is more similar to detailing than ventureshield is - as I said, I think we both did both a detail and ventureshield for that very reason

Glasscoat/pureguard is simply a sealant, like autoglym lifeshine hence comparing to a detail which offers an element of something similar

Yep
There is NO WAY any of these resin systems could protect my 9k S as well as the Ventureshield has
I have 3 stone chips ALL of which are outside the Ventureshield
There is no damage to the VS just some staining for one particularly 'orrible bug, but that would have made a BIG mess of the paint work!
I used to hate the stuff but I'm a convert my S would be worse than cockernee's with out it!

The stain you talk of, if caused by a Bee ( is it a yellow colour), can only be removed after being exposed to UV, so leave the car in direct sunlight for a day or two and it should clean off....hows that for a bit of trivia?

Interesting. Its like any insurance, only economical when you actually need to use it.

I took out Smart cover and Tyre/wheel cover as the wife trashes my daily driver regularly and i could see her doing the same with the AM! It was about £800 for 2 years from memory?

There are limits to what can be claimed for sure, but i would consider it again when i trade for the next vehicle.

Think about it...
1 tyrewall puncture on your new potenza's will cost you a new tyre at around £300 each
Alloy refurbs are not cheap with Diamond Turned at around £200 each repair
Spraying panels is not cheap, my last spray repair would have cost several hundreds had it not been covered

Each to their own, but by the time i have finished the 2 year cover, i will have saved a small fortune!

I refused to pay extra but had the tyre insurance included in the deal. It's amazing how susceptible to nail damage the tyres become when they are worn and almost need replacing biggrin.

Wheel /tyre policies can be good but you need to check the exact terms of the policy and compare it to the costs of new tyres for that particular car - if they work in your particualar circumstances then great but many don't

For instance a lot of policies limit total claims to £1k over the life of the policy, £250 max per tyre (no good for V12V), etc. The standard policy offered by JCT requires the use of revive for the wheels - I like revive a lot for some things but would never use them again on wheels - they are awful, especially as it's a 'visit you service' which is never good enough for alloys. However I don't agree that a good DT refurb should cost the £200 referred to above - sounds overpriced IMHO

The wheel policy on my audi allows for 5 wheel refurbs and 5 tyres, I think over 2 yrs but may have been 3. I will get a bare minimum of a legitimate full refurb of all 4 wheels so that's over half the policy cost - one genuine tyre blowout and I've covered the cost of the policy

I don't like the 'ding' policies though - too many restrictions on frequency, size, type of repair, etc but if it works for you then great.

Pretty good considering how quickly the prices on these cars fall
- Gap Insurance (pays out difference between invoice and insurance)
Very good and a must have
- Tyre Damage Cover (malicious damage, blowouts etc)
rubbish avoid
- Smart Insurance (scratches/dents/chips cover)
not worth it, its just polish
- Pureguard (Paint/Fabric Protection

Hope that helps.

re The tyre/wheel insurance, its seems expensive at the time of purchase but as with all prices they are negotiable. A bit of internet research reduced my cost to £245 for five tyre replacements ( inc malicious damage ) and ten ( yes 10 ) wheel refurbs over a two year period. I put this price to the Aston main dealer and he matched it. Whatever others say I think that this cover for a bit more than the cost of half a tyre isn't bad. PS I've had one wheel done already so it seems even more of a deal.

Disagree on this one. Had it on my S4 and used it twice and had occasion to use it today. My nearside rear is below 3mm so I was going to replace it and also the offside rear that has over 4mm on it. The idea was to keep the offside rear in case I needed it.

Took the car to have some minor window alignment done and a quick visual inspection and they found that the rear offside has a cut in the side wall. Called the tyre insurance company up and they said to replace it and they will reimburse as it is accidental damage. So I am getting two new tyres and paying for one.

Tyre and alloy wheel damage insurance is well worth the money IMHO. Up to five £450 tyre claims permitted over a three year period and ten £100 alloy refurbishment claims in the same period. One AM tyre claim and it has paid for itself, and with the low profile tyres the chances of kerb damage to wheel or tyre is much greater than on many cars.

I also paid for the Shineguard whatever it is called. Had this on an old car and bird crap stained the paint. As it was guaranteed under the Shineguard policy the panel was resprayed FOC.

These insurances all seem crap until you actually need one, then they seem good value for money smile

I rather be classed as a poor person or idiot and get a tyre replaced for free as I had the wherewithal to insure against damage, than a rich person with more money than sense who wants to pay over the odds.

And there is nothing wrong with being poor. Some of the nicest (rich) people I know started off life being poor. And I'll tell you why they are the nicest people I know - because they never forget that they once were poor so they treat everyone with respect regardless.
