Hi all,

Been looking at a late 2008 MK5 Golf TDI GT Sport (140bhp) as a daily driver.

Its a late model, full heated leather with parking sensors, 70k on the clock - Full service history, clutch recently changed along with cam belt and full service.

Is around 7k a good price for one of these? Anything to look out for? Was considering one of these over the 170 version due to the DPF in the later, a quick remap could sort out any lack of power issues.

Any help appreciated!

Depending on the sort of driving you do the DPF shouldn't be an issue, so don't avoid 170s purely because of this.

Not exactly the same but I have a MK5 2.0 TDI/ GT TDI and have run it for 4.5 years.

In my opinion they're great cars, quick (ish), comfortable, relaxing to drive over distances and economical - mine does 50mpg+ on anything other than short journeys. A mate has exactly what you're looking for and had my one before that, from our collective knowledge things to look for;

- badly repaired accident damage, obvious I know but as many were company cars they may be more likely to have been pranged
- corroded alloys, they seem to be of a poor quality
- cambelt history, though think you mention this
- tyre wear can be uneven, 236lb/ft so a reasonable amount going through them
- GT is a LOT stiffer than mine, some appreciate it, some not, depends what you like/are using it for - my mate likes the handling of his but prefers the sofer ride of mine - horses for courses naturally
- overly sensitive wiper/light sensor
- MK5's are badly built interior wise as compared to MKIV's and dont wear nearly as well, look for door handles/rests, gearknob, radio controls, seat squabs - plastics are inferior ie anyone wearing rings will easily wear plastics out

Any other questions please email me, happy to help, overall great cars in my opinion, a little dull, but excellent daily

I ran a 2007 GT Sport TDI from new for 4.5 years/55k

The alloys do corrode a bit and are a 'mare to keep clean

The cruise control failed on mine, not sure if it's common

It liked oil. Regularly. I have a Passat as a replacement with the same engine and it uses no oil at all so not sure if I just had a oil-y engine.

The parking sensors were....basic. They seemed very aftermarket.

Apart from that it was great. Reliable, nothing fell off, 50mpg+ on a run and reasonable servicing.

I'd avoid DPF as I've heard they were a problem. I specifically ordered mine without.

Stick with the 140 its the sweeter engine

I'd be tempted to get a MK6 though, the MK5 is two generations out date now the MK7 is out. An early 09 MK6 GT TDI can be had for £8-9k these days and offers a nicer interior along with the far more refined common rail diesel engine

Having the PD/non common rail engine I'd agree they are noisy, but I've not found it an issue, but you won't be in any doubt what you're in though - again personal choice. Plus as noted MKVI interiors are a nicer, though I wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be. A MKVI with MKIV build quality would be perfect!

Does make me laugh the comments about the MKV costing VW too much to make, certainly not on the bl**dy interior!

I have an 85k 2.0T GTI, 2006 reg, and the interior is almost as new and I have no rattles at all. I bought it 15 months ago with 66k on.

I'd say check the aircon works, my compressor went a couple of weeks ago and cost £500 to replace, it is a known weak point. Also the suspension can rattle a bit as the miles get on.

I returned my company GT Sport 140 a couple of months ago with 70K on the clock. It was one of the "run-out" MkVs with heated leather seats, auto lights/wipers, etc. but no parking sensors. I had cruise fitted which always worked fine.

Had no real problems at all. Only thing that ever broke was the damper mechanism in the glove box lid. Rear discs were replaced at 65K as they were quite badly scored. Apart from oil & tyres that was it.

Other things I'd suggest looking out for are pitted/corroded alloys, and uneven tyre wear (my original rear tyres suffered from this & generated an annoying droning noise at 40-50mph).

Some cars have problems with the sensitivity of the auto wipers, but I found them spot-on most of the time.

Also, I'd look for one with the "highline" trip computer. This lets you change lots of settings yourself - things like auto lock/unlock & "coming home" light delay.

Ive a Jetta which is very similar to your golf, its an 07, so a tad older. Ive noticed that the passenger side door has habit of not always unlocking with the central locking, apparently this is comman. (Not sure on quick fix)

You sure it hasn't got single door unlocking mode enabled? That means if you press the remote fob once only the drivers door unlocks, have to press it twice in quick succession for all doors to unlock

It does do that one press for driver, then two for all, but its just that one door that sometimes doesn't unlock. As you do I had a quick google and it seemed to pop up on some forums. So i'm not the only one, just thought i'd let the op know.

Very much this. We run an '07 GT Sport and majority motorway usage will 'saw tooth' inside edges of the rear tyres- each alternate tread block wears quicker than the next adjacent resulting in a bad 'droning' noise at certain speeds akin to failing wheel bearings. It is a known wide-tyred FWD VW problem and effects some tyres more than others (I've found Bridgestones to be very susceptible. Running your hand round the inside edges of the rear tyres is a worthwhile check.

Having a problem with my mk5 5 gt tdi golf. Keeps coming up with emissions problem and putting it limp mode at around 70 mph. I've had it cleared and also blanked the egr of but still come back on. Thinking about having it maped and blanking the egr of all together. Will this make a difference does any one know. New problem has recently come up with the turbo over boosting when had the machine on it it's saying it's the turbo boost sensor any ideas ?
