Hi all

First post... rudely skipping the introduction so apologies in advance!

Bought my new V8VS a month ago. Dealer gave me free Autoglym (he seemed v keen to hit his end of quarter feedback target) so delayed having anything done for a while.

Now tending towards PPF'ing the bonnet and front with ceramic coat on rest. Is this a wise strategy? What would seasoned PH'ers recommend?

And any rec's for detailers within a 50 mile radius of London?

Cheers!

You know the rules, pics or it didn't happen.

I hear Topaz are pretty good although not the cheapest (no affiliation at all). I think Shmee uses them for those old jalopies he has hehe

Mine has PPF on full front, sills, rear quarters and mirrors and ceramic coat elsewhere. Paintshield (Peterborough) for the PPF and Paddy/Francis Maloney (who is mobile and will work on the car at Paintshield) for the detail and ceramic coat. Still very happy with both after nearly 2 years.

I can recommend Mint Detailing (http://www.mintcondition-uk.com/) in Romford.

Plenty of options but DO NOT have any kind of coating applied until the car has been professionally detailed otherwise all you are doing is sealing swirls, scratches, paint defects etc in to the paintwork.
Ideal situation is to get the same person/people/ set-up to carry out the detailing and coating application at the same venue.

Thanks all for the speedy feedback

So at present I only have the highly cropped (to avoid the plate) photo I sent to the frenemy ex-missus... we still chat occasionally and I couldn't resist 🤒

More to follow. Intend to have the full Bamford Rose treatment at some point.

Had my 1st Vantage done by Gtechniq originally at their UK HQ and it lasted for years, see here

http://gtechniq.com/detailing-services/

Re the PPF, in 83k miles I never got chips at the top of the bonnet (inc a few trackdays) but the bonnet edge, front bumper and side sills/arches were peppered. On a black car, quite noticeable. If not doing a whole kit, Id go for those parts

The dealer sorted it all out when I traded the car in anyway.....

"Frenemy" ha ha.

I too can recommend Mint in Romford. Steve there has been doing it fit years (interesting stories about Bankers' bonuses "back in the day" and he worked with McClaren until they moved to Surrey so excellent pedigree.

He also has a buddy who apparently is a real anal Detailer - just what you want so the advice above to get the car detailed first, then protect I would recommend too.

No involvement with Steve/Mint, other than he did some great wrapping on our Concours-entering V8VR.

Hi everyone, as you can see I am not a prolific poster but as my company name is mentioned a couple of times (thanks for the recommendations lads biggrin ) I thought I would reply.

Regarding to detail before or after PPF, in my opinion (and that of some very experienced detailers as well) definitely after fitting ppf.

There is no point in spending time and money paint correcting a panel that is going to be covered in ppf, as the film will hide all swirl marks and holograms (please see picture) and with the latest self healing films they will never return. The only paint defects that will show through the film are stone chips and major scratches that would need some sort of paint work rather than machine polishing.

Additionally every time you machine polish a car you are removing factory paint no matter how little, why would you want to do that if you don't have to? also when and if the film is ever removed the chances are that the panel will need some sort of correcting then, unless the film is going to be replaced of course.

Finally once the film has been applied your detailer of choice will be able to work his magic and after any correcting of the remaining exposed panels is carried out, the final finish will go over the whole car, film as well, although I would not recommend applying any ceramic type coatings on the film as it could quite possibly nullify the selfhealing properties of the underlying ppf.
A good hydrophobic coating is needed on the film. I have had some very favourable results with Gtechniq EXO (I am not a detailer so have no affiliation with Gtechniq) on the film I use though as always you should discuss with the PPF installer as to what they would recommend.

Coverage...how much is needed is a cost vs protection vs aesthetics question.
Historically the film was only available in 2ft rolls limiting the amount of seamless coverage available and making partial bonnets the norm. Then 4ft rolls came out and full bonnets without joins became a possibility, now 5ft rolls are available meaning that all but the biggest bonnets are able to be wrapped in one piece leading to the rise in popularity of the 'full front clip' coverage. This does away with the line across the bonnet and wings left by the 'standard' coverage kits.

With the new generation of self healing films full body wraps are now gaining in popularity as well and with the availability of matt films you can have whatever colour you want from the factory turned matt without the inherent problems associated with matt paint and quite probably for less than the premium charged by the manufacturers as well as having the paint protected...bonus....

I hope I have clarified a few points and if not feel free to ask away.

Steve

I too use Topaz, not cheap (haggle they always knock something off the initial quote) but excellent quality work

I'm bemused by Mintys comment about detailing afterwards. The film is thin stuff, I wouldn't want the paint not to be perfect before having it sealed in for 7 years.

What are your thoughts Paddy?

To be honest, the film does hide a lot of the defects, but I believe having the paint spot on before the film goes on is the best course of action. Astons have a lot of sanding marks in the paint and it's worth getting those out especially. Most companies will say that machine polishing the car before hand will and to the overall look of the final finish.

Just make sure they do what hey say they are going to do. I detailed a Porsche 918 spyder in black that had been covered in film by one of the big boys and the owner wanted paintshield to take the film off and replace it as he wasn't happy with the finish. When the film came off, you should've seen the state of the paintwork! So, a couple of days worth of machine polishing later, the new film went on and the owner was over the moon.

Max Protect in Kings Langley do a great job, can highly recommend them! I filmed them putting a full PPF on this GT3 RS and the attention to detail is incredible.

Original car spa in Surrey have a good reputation and keep up with the latest in sealants. They also have a bodyshop and wheel Refurb ‘friend’.

They have a good fb rating (4.7) along with some funny responses to the numpties that also reply.

They also have a decent car wash which is usually part of a package (rather than a zipped up bag that’s never opened).

Not local but concur with the coverage above AND others comment about a professional detailing before the PPF. Just had my DBS done and removal of the swirls looks fantastic

Wow! What a beautiful DBS. Which green is that?
I had mine ceramic coated two years ago and still have the original stone guards (front bumper, lower front wings (around the headlights), sills and wheel arches.
Still looks perfect.

Understand it’s just called Aston Green. Great combination with the green leather interior. Not to everone’s taste though but couldn’t care wink
