Not an expert of doglegs and whatnot, but could it have been just for heritage reasons? Like a British sports car is expected to have a dogleg throwing back at the golden age of motoring?
I have a 5 speed dogleg in my BMW E30 M3 - and really love it, because during driving on mountain roads I'm always shifting between 2nd and 3rd. The fact that the dogleg places 2nd and 3rd within one straight gate makes shifting much quicker and more natural. I beleive thats the main reason for the dogleg's existance. In fact I wish I had a dogleg in my V8V as well - however, not sure if I'd use 7th that often.
With the torque available in the V12V I never used anything other than 3rd gear once moving. With my `76 Vantage (which has a dogleg 1st and 5 gears) it is the same. Probably the AMG 4litre needs a bit more revs before it gets going and hence the need for 7 gears. I have watched a couple of videos of the manual AMR Vantage and especially in the wet it seems to be a bit of a handful ( more than the V12VM ever was)

On the occasions (all too rare now on UK roads) when I can give my 4.7 manual ‘the beans', I always have to back off whilst in 3rd gear. What is the speed at max revs in 3rd ?
If conditions allow continued steady high speed, I then short-shift from 3rd to 6th.
Under those particular circumstances, 4th and 5th gears serve no purpose.
It therefore puzzles me, as our cars have so much torque, why seven manual gears would be helpful to a driver ? I can appreciate the reason more gears in an automatic car, leaving aside emission regulations, because closer ratios mean the car occupants cannot feel the gearchanges.

Henry has just made me want a manual one to replace my old girl even more.Great video. Liked the white highlights on the dark blue car. Unusual and enhances things.
Gear stick seems fine to me. Seems to offend others. Easy to change!
The thing I’m most interested in learning about the new manual Vantage is whether the basic ergonomics of the seat-to-stick position is much better compared to the previous manual Vantage. To me, that was it’s undoubted Achilles heel.
I suppose if it’s not mentioned in the vids, it’s no longer an issue. A test drive would seal that Q...
I don`t hate the new gear knob per se, but when you consider what they have managed in the past it does look a bit like it`s not a push to imagine it`s been lifted from a Honda or Hyundai, and that`s not what you want for 150K. Cynic that I am, I imagine a Carbon, Alloy, Titanium or Moon Dust version in the spec list before too long...
