New Vantage?

It’s an SS3 car. Manuals do hold their values better in the US, too. But that was my point - if I can’t find the right manual V12, rather than go for an automated shifter might as well go for something completely different.

+1! Quite a few out there, probably get 10% msrp without much or any negotiation.

Doubt they will hold value much better than the auto shif though. It's not the transmission It's just the fact the more expensive the car, the more the depreciation. .

Because you have ten other cars in your collection and 740 miles equates to about eight Cars & Coffee events plus a few other car events and three dinners out, which means it got a fair shot but maybe not as many as the F12 this year. Over here that’s how a lot of cars are used. And why not?

I’m as excited as anyone to see and drive the new Vantage.... but sorry to be an old bore but I’m unimpressed by the fashion for drifting and seeing that as a selling point. It’s a slow way to get round a track and kinda makes the car seem a bit snappy. It’s also missing the real point of the car which is more about a fast A Road blasts or weekend trip to somewhere warm preferably via the Alps etc. I’d rather see it being driven over sustenpass, or back roads of Bavaria or wherever, with some corners and cambers you’re not expecting and the car responding to analogue inputs to keep it safe. That would get my pulse going more.

And where’s the gear stick?

Don't get me wrong. I'm eternally grateful to all the people who buy new Astons, take a massive hit, then trade them in after 2-3 years so there is a supply of "affordable" used ones for people like me to buy down the line. But doing that and not really using the car, however many nice cars you have in your collection, is just crazy to me.

From a handling dynamics point of view, a car's ability to drift translates into many different areas. When you see journos drifting a car they tend to be describing (well, the good ones anyway) how it transitioned into that slide. If I'm driving a 500hp RWD car I want to know if when i squeeze the throttle mid bend, is the car going to snap and spit me into a hedge or break away progressively so I can catch it easily. If you want to drive near the limits of a car you need to be able to trust it and if a car can hold a nice smooth, easily controlled drift on a track at 10/10ths driven by Chris Harris you can pretty much guarantee that it's going to be a peach to drive hard at 8/10ths on the road.

Plus, it looks ace.

You can look at it two ways, one is your POV. My take is that none (well most) of us will pedal the new Vantage around a track near or on its limit for a timed lap, shaving 0.1 off our previous time because (a) we don't have the talent and (b) we like to take our cars home in one piece. My happiest days on track were chasing friends down and sliding out of corners having fun, not caring 1% about the lost time, instead grinning ear to ear.

I'm not saying you’re wrong at all, simply I'd bet this car is fast, fun and will tick both boxes

Manual is likely to be a good year or so down the line.

Why would they need to offer it straight away? With the new dual clutch gearbox manual will probably only account for 15-20% of sales at most.

And those who really want one will probably order the auto then trade it in for the manual, so Aston wins twice.

I was lucky enough to go to the preview and it usually takes me a while to warm to new designs, but this is something else.

Sorry yep. I did know that but my head was in AMG GT mode.

Still a spectacularly good gearbox IMO

8 speed ZF known for long time and that there would be no double clutch.

NDA's not really enforceable either. Especially in a case like this.

I saw the new Vantage today at the factory, its fantastic, I really like it, it certainly addresses all the criticisms of the outgoing model and brings it up to date in every way.

We have at least a new car per year to look forward to over the next 6 years, and with the quoted performance of the "entry level" car being where it is now, the future S/GT/whatever models sure will be something else
