Decisions Decisions when buying a DB9
Discussion
Hi All
I am looking at buying a DB9 for the first time. I am going to buy the book, but not sure that it is going to help me with this question.
My budget at a stretch is £45k - £50k.
What would you suggest that you buy an new car with more miles on the clock or an older car with less miles on a clock. Example being
An 09 plate with 40k on the clock or 07 plate with 24k on the clock.
I would be looking to ensure that any car would have the correct service history etc.
Thanks in advance
Paul

Hi Paul,
I am on my third DB9, had a 2007, 2008 and now 2009 model.
I would recommend, based on my experience, to go for the most recent model, regardless of mileage, as the DB9 evolved and got better with each model year (up to 2012, at which time they changed the design in a way I didn't like anymore... ;-)
More mileage is no problem, as long as you stick to the maintenance schedule. It is only of -possible- concern when selling the car.
Good luck in your search !

Hi Paul,
rust bubbles around door handle are (unfortunately) not uncommon.
Garage can fix that.
Also check corrosion on door mirror stalks (black paint falling off). I still have to fix that one on mine ;-)
As also stated above, condition prevails mileage. Check for scratches on interior, leather,... . Sometimes such things reveal how previous owner treated the car... ;-)
Good luck,
Frank

Definitely get Grant's book
The big relevant model change here was September 08 (moving to the 09 MY). The car got the newer dash, an ECU/glass key rather than the older Ford key, about 20bhp more and revised rear suspension. You'll pay a premium for 09MY over 08MY accordingly.
Also just remember that the financial crisis hit then, so new car sales dipped and that translates into fewer used cars now from that period (albeit still relatively common).

I've only had my 07 a few months but recall it felt a lot tighter than the 05s I drove at similar mileages. If I bought a DB9 again I would look for a newer model with adaptive damping regardless of mileage as they seem pretty sturdy in all areas.
However balance this with how long you intend to keep it and ease of resale. DB9 value dips sharply with miles but bottoms out eventually, also there is a glut of second hand DB9s so buyers can be choosy over low miles cars.

Before buying my 2009 model I test drove a 70,000 mile old 2005 car which almost put me off completely such was its poor condition (missing screws, dodgy electrics etc). It was a 'Timeless' car so ought to have been much better.
Then I drove a 2006 with much lower mileage and in much better condition, which convinced me that mileage and condition were important considerations. However once I had read Grant's book I knew I was going to hold out for a 2009 model, because the improvements were worth the extra.

That reminds me, and just to clarify (because i think it confuses everyone). Aston Martin follows the traditional Midlands shutdown pattern over the Summer. And its then that model year changes take place (rather than calendar year end). So a car produced in September 2008 should be a 2009 Model Year (MY). September 2009 will be a 2010MY etcThen I drove a 2006 with much lower mileage and in much better condition, which convinced me that mileage and condition were important considerations. With the DB9 the big change is that move to the 2009 MY (so cars from September 2008 onwards)
As Rob said, for me the big difference is the 2009 MY so unless it is horrendous mileage I'd hold out for that.
There are small improvements/changes every year, but MY2009 have so many improvements over the early models that it is a real milestone in the DB9 development. That's not to say that they aren't all gorgeous before anyone gets offended

I have had my 07 volante for over 3 years now. it has not lost me anything in that time in terms of depreciation, and costs 2-3k pa in maintenance with main dealer pa. It has been a joy and a pleasure to own. Still one of the most beautiful cars on the road. I went for the latest model I could afford on reasonable mileage...in my case it was an 07 on 23k miles, now 31k miles...and fell for the colour...grigio titanium. Don't think you can go too far wrong with any particular model, but the 09MY upgrades do seem to have gone down well.

I am offended .....in fact I'm very offended....despite your use of weasel words to qualify your comment. There are small improvements/changes every year, but MY2009 have so many improvements over the early models that it is a real milestone in the DB9 development. I have worked all my life ....man and boy ....to able to afford my 06 DB9V and then some geezer comes along and gets gobby about my motor.
Some of us ,on benefits, just can't get the bd Tory government to go that extra mile so we can afford an 09 model.
That's not our fault,when Jeremy,ever blessed be his name,becomes PM ,he's promised us loadsa wonga.....09 DB9 here I come.

I've got to correct you there. Everyone know that [insert the current leader of UKIP - might need regular updating] is the only person who will provide British built Aston Martins to the British people at an affordable price! The problem with trying to run a DB9V on benefits is that you can only afford it if you can claim for more kids than you can actually fit in it. Even if you order the DB9V edition child with no legs (hopefully legs are an optional extra, check the spec sheet carefully when ordering).
I expect that when Jeremy, ever blessed be his name, becomes PM you may be able to afford a DB9 on benefits without children, but you will only be allowed to have one goat under bonnet instead of hundreds of horses.
PS
Good colour DB9 by the way
