Lamborghini seem to have had no issues using the name.

Doesn't Superleggera just mean 'super light' in Italian ?

On the basis that its just 2 words, then you could probably 'legally' stick it on any car (Cant believe you could copyright the name ?)

Certainly sounds more exotic than 'lightweight'

Looking forward to another good looking Aston Martin car, they seem to be covering all bases at the moment !!

Given that the font & style look the same, I'm struggling to imagine this isn't being done with cooperation from Carrozzeria, who own the trademark

However I would guess it's more a licencing deal than one which uses their methods, a little like what appears to have been happening with Zagato on recent 'collaborations'

I wonder if this iteration of the DBS (Superleggera) will be branded as a DB11
with a body kit? I guess this depends whether Aston have made significant
changes to the form beyond the previous DBS which to my eyes has always been
visually much more than a DB9 with a body kit regardless of the carbon and underbody
changes.

This looks nothing like a DB11. The two won't be confused, trust me.

Mention of Superleggera (super light) now has me wondering.

I recently watched a tv programme, The Story of the Alfa Romeo 4C.
A sports car built using a carbon fibre 'tub', but only costing around £50,000. Normally using a carbon fibre chassis to achieve the lightest possible weight, is the reserve of very expensive sports cars.

By using the model name DBS Superleggera, might this be the very first Aston Martin to use a carbon fibre chassis?

Being somewhat sworn to secrecy on the DBS, I don't know what the deal is with carbon chassis, but to briefly touch upon Alfa...

As you say, they seem to find a way of making large swathes of carbon fibre manufacture readily available to the regular motorist (possibly feeding off Ferrari's R&D). Not just the 4C, but the Guilia QV has some very impressive construction methods (somewhat reminds me of the Vanquish in places). So carbon itself is becoming a bit more 'everyday'.

Perhaps its just a prototype body as we saw with the new Vantage and the final car will look different, at least I'd hope. Also, the idea of it having a carbon tub would be awesome but doubtful since the architecture that was developed for the DB11 was meant to be used in future vehicles (Vantage used the same basic architecture), its simply more efficient and effective to do it that way from a supply chain/manufacturing perspective. Although I certainly hope I'm wrong, would love it if Aston went all out and built the DBS a full carbon tub and had it weigh <1500kg

I’m sure I read that all the early test mules were using a DB11 body.

I’d assume any test mules using something close to the actual shape will be covered in camo, not just the black wrap shown above?

I certainly hope you are right about it being a prototype body to hine the real thing. A completely new (proper) DBS would be very welcome. I agree, however, that the investment into the architecture to date would render such a thing inefficient from a business perspective and dampens my hope for such a thing.

I'm still juggling the age old conundrum... Last DBS/old Vanquish/new Vanquish...? Why is life so hard! confusedbiggrin

Haha life is always so hard, I'd wait to see what the new DBS Superleggera is like and make a proper decision. Also I might be wrong because as business savvy Andy Palmer is, he's also proven to be a keen petrolhead so he might green light such a thing. Addtionally they are building a unique manual for the Vantage since Merc doesn't offer one, I can't but hope that'll make its way into the DBS Superleggera

It’s based on DB11 architecture and shares a few styling points, but it’s far more recognisable as a different car than the old DBS was to the DB9.

As I said above, you won’t confuse the two.

So the DBS is touring now. Or at least a concept is.

It's likely to be the confidential viewings at the factory, which would explain the NDA.
