Hi guys - looking for help on how Audi numbers its cylinders.
I have a misfire & think its down to a coil pack (it was last time!) - as such rather than shipping it off i would rather do the seemingly simple swapout myself.
However - can't work out which cylinder is which! I *think* its like this but could do with someone correcting me!

Any help appreciated - google, so far, isn't my friend.

Actually - thinking it through i think i've screwed this up & its actually the opposite of what i've said.
10 is 1 & 1 is 10 etc.

For VAG looking at the engine left bank is 1-x front to back, right bank is x+1 - y front to back, where y is the number of cylinders.

I had an occasional cylinder #5 misfire on my (V6) S4 last year.

On the V6 no. 5 cyl is the central one on the right side as seen from the front (1, 2, 3 on the left and 4, 5, 6 on the right) meaning that whether you start the count at the front or back, it is correct either way for a V6 (not so for a V10 though) although I would guess the numbering sequence is the same, i.e. 1-5 left bank and 6-10 right, starting at the front?

Out of curiosity whilst replacing coil no. 5, I disconnected another coil and briefly ran the engine so that the error code confirmed the numbering.

If you want all the service/workshop manuals for your Audi you can get them from; https://erwin.audi.com/erwin/showHome.do you do need to buy a day pass to download but then you can fill yer boots.

IIRC a day pass is around £30 which may seem a lot but the local Audi dealer recently wanted £120 to diagnose a fault. A new coil cost me £30 so job done for £60, plus I've got a full set of manuals for future reference.

There is also a VW version of the site. thumbup

Nothing is ever easy.

So despite having a fault light on the dash the code reader i purchased stated there were no codes. banghead

Borrowed a mates and it said 4 different coils were screwed - so i thought it had potentially started in one location then caused sync issues in the others.

Bright idea as the car stillrunning rough - kill the codes drive it and see what comes back.

Killed codes - issue disappears and car drives fine...

Lose rag. Drive home as know there is something wrong even if car is denying it.

Drive it this morning and it starts rough - produces an temporary mgt , then sorts itself out, drop it into garage to see what those codes were (as my mates code reader now stopped connecting!) - the new codes state low fuel flow. Only had the fuel filter replaced a few weeks back.

Will leave it till i get a permanant read/fault again. banghead

You need to get hold of VCDS, apart from the diagnostics you can monitor for faults such as misfires whilst the engine's running.

I don't know if it's a similar issue but when mine had a faulty coil it would completely shut down the cylinder, only to be OK again after switching off & restarting. Apparently it will do this if it detects 5 consecutive misfires? Logging misfires per cylinder in real time would help diagnose.

Nope - both sides.

Shame one side would probably indicate a wiring issue

Right - cylinder 3 fault code.
Replaced the coil.
Currently looking ok - thought i felt some hesitation on one full chat acceleration but may have just been the road.
Fingers crossed.

Thanks all for your help.

Not fixed.
Think its a leaking gasket letting oil on the coil when removed.
Getting this done by a local specialist next week.
