Sajid Javid next PM?
Discussion
What do people think about Sajid Javid? Seems like a classic Thatcherite maybe providing a more electable alternative to Rees Mogg.
Will or should the conservatives move to the right after the May era? Is adopting a more Thatcherite position a mistake and not where uk elections are now won?
Whilst Corbyn is leader of labour, it probably doesn’t matter but just in case labour manage to overthrow him or form a new party with the one nation conservatives, who is the most electable conservative leader.
Pros for Sajid Javid, seems quite eloquent, positive immigration story, had a job outside politics, aparently happy to speak out over windrush and medical cannabis. Thatcherite alternative to May.
Cons, linked to failed 2016 coup, Thatcherite, might look a bit foreign. Muslim.

Seems the best of a mediocre bunch. He was on TV the other week regarding the Windrush deportations and spoke quite clearly and calmly, stating half those deported were done so at the end of prison sentences and weren't gong to be let back in and unwanted here.
When he describes himself as a cultural Muslim, I think that might be code for him being agnostic/ atheist.

I think that’s about saying, Muslims can vote for him and the conservatives aren’t racist but non Muslims don’t need to worry about shariah law taking over. El stovey said:

Strongly disagree, I think the Tories are far too divided and potentially capable of gifting a win to Labour at the next election, especially if Brexit is not handled well...On the subject of Javid, I don't know too much about him but so far I've been impressed by what he's said, and if he continues as he has started and delivers on what he promises then I think he'd make a good Tory leader or PM.

Like an argument with an idiot, it simply cannot be handled well. it is, as May well knows (and that spineless gammon Cameron knew when he shirked his responsibilities) a poisoned chalice. It will be impossible to please everyone and very easy to upset many.Digga said:

can you extrapolate on the 'Thatcherite', one-nation', moving right bits?Whilst Corbyn is leader of labour, it probably doesn’t matter but just in case labour manage to overthrow him or form a new party with the one nation conservatives, who is the most electable conservative leader.

Under May and Cameron the conservatives are a centrist party and winning elections. Many conservatives don’t think these are traditional conservative values and want a more Thatcherite right wing leader and direction.
So I’m asking if this is a good idea having a Thatcherite leader or will it make the conservatives unelectable?

I want to hear and see much more of the guy under pressure politics before I can make up my mind. At least another couple of years as Home Office Minister.
Sort of what I think. Thus far he seems to be a very safe pair of hands whilst also coming across well in the media which sometimes, even competent operators struggle to do and, annoyingly, a very small number of incompetent operators can manage. He needs some hair - baldness and high office rarely go hand in hand.

Im not sure being a baldy is going to stop someone getting elected these days.
From the little I seen of him he comes across as articulate, intelligent, and gives a straight answer. That's the sort of thing I admire in a leader. He also has the added benefit of not coming across as posh (I've no idea what his background is)
I'd be surprised if he wasn't PM/party leader at some time. Given the current situation it might be sooner rather than later.

i mentioned the possibility of him being pm material on a recent thread. hard to assess whether he is best of a bad bunch or genuinely capable. the next year or so should be a good indicator.there are plenty on here that would happily see shariah law in the uk. when it comes to acid throwing moped crims and the bloke that cut the hand off the old lady to steal her rings, i think even i would be in agreement with how they would be dealt with under shariah law.
Javid seems like a decent chap. I like his mould-breaking style of being forthright in an agreeable manner. His telling it like it is to the Police Federation was a good start.
Out of all the current wannabe tory hopefuls, he looks like a good candidate.
Who would we rather have:
Gove
Boris
JC
May............

My biggest fear, given his apparent competence and popularity is that his career is sabotaged in order to further the interests of a less suitable politician. It happens. Javid would IMHO, be one of the best figureheads the Conservatives could hope for; they don't need any more stuffy, public school types, because that is most certainly limiting their appeal, even if they are individually, competent politicians.
