2019 Mazda MX-5 - official!

First pics and details from Mazda on the new MX-5, plus a launch date - hurry up August!

While the surprise of a new MX-5 has been dulled somewhat with the car already in Japan, it's still nice to receive confirmation from Mazda of a faster, smarter, more dynamic roadster. This is no simple facelift, either: Mazda says it is "refining the joy of open-top motoring and enhancing the inimitable thrill of the Jinba Ittai driving experience."

The most significant change is as discussed in that Japanese drive, the 2.0-litre engine now boasting 184hp at 7,000rpm and redlining at 7,500. Both 1.5- and 2.0-litre now comply with the WLTP/RDE test cycle (and Euro 6d Temp), while it's also claimed that the engines "benefit from refined acceleration control" to create even better throttle response.

Elsewhere the focus is on safety for this updated MX-5, with five new 'i-Activsense' technologies - as Mazda calls them - introduced on the car for the first time. There's Advanced Smart City Brake Support, Smart City Brake Support (Reverse), Driver Attention Alert, Traffic Sign Recognition System and a, er, Rear View Camera. Not sure the last one is all that significant, but then if it makes an MX-5 cheaper to insure (as many of these technologies tend to), then it seems churlish to complain.

Finally, Mazda has confirmed that both the 16- and 17-inch wheels are now offered with a darker paint finish, and that the brown roof option will make it to Europe. However, that is dependent on spec and market, so we can't be absolutely sure for the UK just yet.

Should you want an MX-5 that's "more exciting and satisfying to drive than ever before" - and, let's face it, why wouldn't you? - then Mazda says the car goes on sale throughout Europe from August. As soon as there's news on UK prices and spec, you'll be the first to know!

Such lovely cars. I always take a moment to admire them on the road. Particularly in that lovely ruby colour. Welcome upgrade also!

Just wish they'd expand the colour palette that wasn't a shade between white and black.

Completely agree! Would love to see this generation in 'Spirited green', something similar to 'Winning blue' as used on the early mk3 and a bright vibrant yellow..... Come on Mazda......

I think it's amazing how they've managed to get a fair bit more power out of the 2.0 but also got it through the new emissions regulations so easily. What i mean by that is not having to discontinue the car(s) temporarily while they are further developed. I hope Mazda keep the petrol engine going for a while yet.

The extra power is most welcome too! I know that's not what the little MX-5 is all about but it's becoming more things to more people i reckon these days.

It's a really pretty design. It's quite impressive to think they've managed to make something 'classically' good looking and still meet modern design safety requirements.

They have discontinued them for the moment- only the 1.5 is showing on the Mazda UK site.

But we can't complain! Gaining 20hp from the engine while meeting stricter emissions is very impressive indeed.

Such a lovely little thing. I really want one, but don't know what I'd do with it!

They are a wonderfully styled little car.

Maybe the back has too much of a hint of Jaguar, but otherwise it is fresh and original, unlike the derivative Elan styling of the original MX5.

They certainly make the Fiat look like a dog's breakfast.

I would like to see a lightweight "Club Sport" version with wind up windows, no aircon, no driver aids etc.

And I agree about the restricted choice of colours. What's that all about?

They are one of only a couple of modern cars that appeal.

Club Sport with a special edition engine too - an extra 1000 revs and a few more horses. Would be very nice.

So they have! My apologies. Either way, i think it's still a quick turnaround for them to release it in the time-frame that they have done.

Well, I always thought the NB wanted to be an XK8 when it grew up, so nothing new there, then!

But I suppose there's only so much one can do with a basic shape, these days.

But really, I agree. It's a gorgeous little thing that would benefit from more colours and a poverty-spec version, just like the basic 1.8 NA that I once ordered. Less can be more.

It took me by surprise as well, but I'd imagine dealers have a bit of stock remaining so they've discontinued production.

It really is a shame.

They shouldn't have bothered with the Fiat at all.

Just stuck an Alfa badge on the MX5, added a tan leather interior, kept the Mazda engine and given it a raspy exhaust.
