I know 4x4's, or do we just bow to our american overlords and call them SUVs? are largely hated in these parts, and the Q7 seems to be top of that pile but I rather like (some of) them.

I tend to buy cars based on their engine, or atleast it's in the top 2 or 3 priorities and the 4.2 TDI V8 seems like a good'un?

I actually want a 100 series Landcruiser but for half the price I can have a newer Q7 and it'll be a lot less rusty.

Any desirable or essential options i need to look out for? or any facelifts that are worth holding out for?

Budget ideally would be around 10k, which is towards the low end for 4.2's. My other option would be half that again for Touareg V10 but that has it's own sometimes eye watering issues.

I know the answer is go buy a fast estate but it's an itch that needs scratching.

The 4.2 Tdi V8 is a generally good unit, and a good match for the car. Gives it some surprising "go" for only a marginal penalty at the pumps compared with the 3.0 Tdi. Look out for DPF sensor issues, it's a gearbox out job to replace them. The engine itself is sound.

My advice would be to wait until a long-term owner private sale comes up that has been well maintained - they are out there. I wouldn't go near one that had lots of owners. Dealers tend to stick running boards and 22" alloys on them, neither of which are a good idea IMO.

Thanks.

Sounds like they got the ubiquitous ZF 8 speed in 2010, which I imagine is worth holding out for.

It also sounds like S line just adds cosmetic stuff and firmer suspension, which leads me to assume the SE is probably the better bet.

Sounds like lots of the options are specced individually though so I can imagine it's difficult to work out what you're looking at as everything is sold "Fully Loaded" naturally.

I had a 6-speed box for the 8 years I owned mine, it was perfectly fine but the reviews for the facelift model did suggest the 8 speeder was better again.

I think you'll struggle to find many SE version, the S-line sold vastly more. I can't remember the spec differences TBH. Out the box the V8 had zero extra options over the V6 for the £10k price increment, and it wasn't overly generous on kit with bluetooth and satnav and MMI all being cost options. However most cars would have had those options ticked. Some of these can be dealer retrofitted at a price. Don't trust dealer "fully loaded" gumf, you'll need to check the actual equipment list closely.

Very different prospect to a Landy obviously, but in a different league for use on the road. They're genuinely comfortable cruisers. You might struggle to find a facelift V8 model for £10k that doesn't have intergalactic mileage, but good luck with your search.

Looks like S Line out number SE's by atleast 20 to 1 so that's probably not worth holding out for.

Pano roof seems desirable, along with the BOSE hi-fi and the higher spec MMI. Not sure about the double glazing as it tends to go opaque eventually and is often mega bucks to replace.

I've also read 6k is not unusual for tyres, that sounds excessive, I'd expect decent tyres, driven normally to last atleast 10k if not 15.

I had all of those (except the double glazing) but tbh I wouldn't get too worked up about the lack of any of them if the rest of the car ticks your boxes. The BOSE is OK but not great. I didn't bother on the replacement car. I did keep the pano roof, makes the cabin a bit more airy. The lamination between the panes on the audi double glazing of this era had a tendency to lift starting at the edges, definitely worth avoiding IMO.

6k out of a set of tyres is nonsense. I used OEM Continentals and Goodyears and got 12k-15k out of them. You do need to keep an eye on the tyre pressures and the tracking, but do that and you should be fine.

Definitely, but they're 3 times the price.

Good to know.

I'm not an audiophile so the BOSE doesn't bother me too much although I'm sure it helps resale a bit.

I'm too picky, I don't want black or white and would prefer not to have another silver car. Also don't want a black interior and when you're dealing with only a handful of cars anyway it does limit your options.

8 speed absolutely worth having, as is a reversing camera (car is massive).

Look carefully at the interior for signs of abuse by miscreant children.

Make sure suspension works and doesn't sag.

DPF sensors can be changed in situ, no need to remove gearbox. Not a fun job but done plenty.

I've got a transporter with no rear view camera or sensors so not too worried about that.

Not like a VAG DPF to cause issues laugh

Enquired about this one in a classic case of budget creep but it's provisionally sold. Love the colour and it's well specced, although I prefer light colour interiors.
