Hi All,

I'm considering a Tiguan petrol as a family weekend and Euro trip car. No commuting. Will only consider petrol, I think 150bhp engines (1.4 or 1.5) or maybe 2.0 if lucky (cost). Traditionally I'm more into estate cars, but the Tiguan looks nice and appeals.

I had a Passat estate (B6) when they were new. Great car, but SO boring to drive... Will the Tiguan be the same? MiL has 1.2 Polo (2012) and its ok but a bit souless...

I have another car for "fun" but just would prefer the family car to have a modicum of involvement (it will replace a BMW 5).

Appreciate I need a test drive but in just 30mins driving might not be able to get a proper feel.

There's a bit of life here: https://www.tiguanforums.co.uk/

Wife has a diesel mk1 and daughter has an Ateca 1.0 petrol, so both a bit off what you're looking for.

We have a 19 plate 1.5tsi EVO manual In ‘Match’ trim. Typical VW fare with nice interior and feels solid. Performance is sufficient, averages between 35-40mpg with mixed driving. It’s my partners car and the only extra things she would like is heated seats and an electric boot lid as it’s quite heavy.

My wife has a petrol Mk 1 Tiguan 2.0TSI R Line with 200bhp and 7 spd DSG box. I'm not sure the lower powered petrols would be much different to run than the larger engine a d imagine could be quite strained, particularly loaded up on a Euro trip. Our has just had a stage 1 remap done which has increased power to 250bhp and torque from 225lb ft to 312lb ft and it's much better! You could probably do the same with the lower powered petrols.

Unsure if your 5 series was a touring, if so the Tiguan will be much smaller. We have only 1 child at the moment and just about fit all our stuff in. The rear seats do slide back and forward though giving a bit more space. But in reality the boot is only very marginally larger than a Golf on which its based. Easily solved with a roof box for the longer trips away.

Build quality good, I'd try to get a sport or R line trim as they come with some goodies as standard, handle and look a bit better etc.

An ex-colleague had a 1.4 TSI. Ordered a manual for some reason. It was decent spec. as he could throw a lot at it with his car allowance (which would get you a nice 5-series).

He liked it so much he bought it from the lease company when he retired.

I only ever had a passenger ride in it. Seemed decent enough, but after a 5-series, the quality wasn't quite there - it was perfectly acceptable, though.
