(or was that the M6 ??)

Yup - it was the pig ugly M6.... Unless they've done something with the M vs the normal 6, I find this one of the biggest disappointments in the 'looks department' for many a year. Just looks like it was designed for the US market only (no offence to our US members!)

quote ''I've swapped various cars over the years but only the 911 remains constant because it is quite simply a unique bouquet of automotively dynamic aromas: it's ubiquity is an irrelevance to anyone revelling in the driving seat, as are others' opinions of it''.

Dr 'derestrictor' Johnson certainly has a point about the Bentley, however the general 'bouquet' seems to me to have lost most of it's 'dynamic aroma' as yet another slight variation of the 911 is released to capitalize on the marque. I have recollections of the Turbo S swiping £10,000 from the value of the TT overnight.
The AMV8 will line the coffers of AM, that is what was intended from the outset. Porsche needed the Cayenne for the balance sheet, 911 sales were dropping and the introduction of the most aesthetically challenged uber monster would solve this...and it did. It has appealed perfectly to those with more income and style, to those feeling slightly insecure that other people on the school run may not realise how much cash they actually have.

Aston have got it right....nearly. £10,000 too much and 75 bhp too little. However, I can feel a 'Porschism' around the corner, anyone for a Vantage S ??

I see arguments for both sides which is why im keeping my 996 as a daily hack and will use the Vantage for pure pleasure.
6 secs over 1.5 miles is a vast difference. I think if the 997 had been an entirely new car to the porsche cup driving Stigmeister (as the M6 and Vantage clearly were) the times would have been far closer. I cannot believe however that the hippy woodwork teacher reject considered the interior of the Vantage bad!?!
As far as i am concerned the AMV8 and DB9 interiors are gorgeous and in another league to the German offerings.
My Porka has aerokit M030 sports suspension, sports exhaust, full sports interior package, GT3 wheels and induction tuning but still has little grin factor compared to say my old Cerbera. I feel the noise of the Vantage alone will bring the smiles back.... Now if they would just hurry up and bloody deliver it!

excuses, excuses, excuses, look the Aston is a good car but it was built to take on the 911 and its come up short, and when you think that the carrera s costing 20k less beats it.

You show me a Carrera S costing £20k less than a Vantage and I'll show you a car that will lose a fortune for the owner. My friend has just ordered an 'S' and had no trouble speccing it to £74k (without the £5k ceramic brakes)!

But none of this is the point....yes the Carrera S was quicker (ceramic brakes, wet weather rear weight traction and all), but 99.99% of people;

1. Aren't the Stig.
2. Aren't going to race the cars.
3. Aren't going to come close to doing 130mph across a de-restricted 'country' road in the Isle of Man.

Half of us on here would be quicker in a Focus RS than many people in a Carrera S.....it just isn't the point.

Give the Stig a £55k Noble M400 and he will wipe the floor with all three of them!!.....it just isn't the point.

Owning a car is about so much more than one thing and at this level it is about desires and dreams as much as cold facts. Yes, the Porsche is a 'better' car....but we all knew that from the EVO, Autocar and Top Gear mag tests....so what?

I have owned Ferraris and Porsches and very soon I am going to have a Vantage in my garage.

When I get in it to drive off, I won't for one second wish I was in a 911 Turbo or a bright red 430. The Vantage is todays car and it goes, sounds and above all looks fantastic. Park a Carrera S next to a Vantage and watch the crowds!!

"Watch the crowds" - you seriously think people will watch the AMV8V with an F430 in the vaccinity?

Are you telling me that AMV8V has any objective, subjective or technical variable in more quantity - and thus making it 'better' or more 'imapctful' ito the overall blend of an experience than the 430?

Don't get me wrong, the AMV8V is superb, that's self evident but the fact remains that it is does not appear to be quite the 911 slaying package ito driving dynamics that certainly the 997 represents.

I grant you the noise is a great asset but the styling too subjective an issue to merit serious debate.

But back to 'watching the crowds;' are you buying this car because of an instinctive, performance related rationale or for the expected plaudits of men in delivery vehicles?

If the sense of occasion factor is to be held up as the main argument then I'm sorry, I just don't buy it: any Bentley or Ferrari shares that same, default, post-celeb, ownserhip hangover/ image albatross association which for many, has made Ferrari (and to a far greater degree Porsche) a complete 'no-no' brand.

Read the post and note that it said :

I would also concur with this.

However, I don't see any mention of it being parked next to an F430 ??

quote ''But back to 'watching the crowds;' are you buying this car because of an instinctive, performance related rationale or for the expected plaudits of men in delivery vehicles? ''

That's a little simplistic. A huge % of super car owners, quite sadly IMO, buy their Ferrari/911/Aston to 'be seen in'. If all they were intested in were pure driving dynamics/thrill factor etc, then all would be driving the 'giant killers' such as the hideous Evo. When there is a combination of the two, then it works. The fact that the Aston is 15K too much will appeal to the shallow, bored gumball racer who would be dissapointed to pay any less.
This does raise the question, 'were aston ever really serious about taking on the 911 ??'. The 'max power' set will drop out as not quick enough, leaving their build slots to be filled with perhaps, in their opinion, a more discerning clientele. If really serious, why the £80K RRP.

Look we are at different ends scale for the reason for buying a SPORTS CAR to me it is about dynamic performance and driver involvement that’s where i get my adrenaline rush from. Where i understand your type of SPORTS CAR ownership i don’t respect it. I actually find it quite sad that good sports cars don’t get used as intended.

Ps. I hope people look at you in your car
