Just done a quick search and found that the FM modulators are the only way to go at present...

Has anyone actually had one fitted?

If so, how do you get on with it? What does it sound like and how much did it cost to fit?

HWM in Walton (which I think is where you went for a test drive) do a conversion where they have the lead coming out of the centre console. And they also do a version for other MP3 players that is the same but with a standard headphone jack.

It was nicely done but pretty basic - no controlling of the iPod using the CD autochanger controls or anything like that.

I'll let them tell you the price, but it made me wince!

They had one in a V8 that they were selling, but it's no longer on their website so I guess that it's been sold.

I did indeed go there

Price was a tad steep. I suspect it's a Dension IceLink FM Modulator, which I could get from elsewhere. Just wondering if anyone had tried one.

Will have a dig around some options.

Evening - this debate has been going on in the AM Forum for some time. This link should work....www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?t=335288&f=70&h=0

I have an FM Modulator on my 9. It's not that good (hiss mainly) and both my Pod's don't like the connection and have to be coaxed into action. That said wind the car up to 4,000 revs and you can't hear the hiss at all !! So fit a modulator and drive around like your pants are on fire!

I am yet to try an FM based system which I could live with ( and I suspect the HWM system is the aforementioned Ice Link FM) so we have devised a few AM specific solutions which whilst not exactly cheap, give you a decent iPod connector and a massively upgraded sound system at the same time, as even the Premium systems from the factory fail to deliver IMHO.

Cheers

I bought an iTrip on ebay, made by Griffin, for £29.95 + p&p. It has a range of about a metre and also charges the ipod too. I find it very handy as I swap cars quite often and it's very transportable. Just set the itrip & car radio to the same wavelength and away you go. Similar item in Comet... £60!!

Hope this helps

is there no way of just attaching a wire to the ice system? no spare aux at the back or no way it can be spliced into cd input? FM doesnt seem way forward to me

Apparently not.

Think Chris' solution is new amps etc that have the requisite inputs.

Lack of iPod capability in a 2007 car is a bit dim. But the rest of the car is so very lovely.

Have cut a bunch of CDs and will see what they sound like. I end up using the same play list on my iPod anyway 80-90% of the time. And 6CDs is just over 7hrs of music...test drive at the weekend.

Nah:

"Your car stereo must have a 3.5mm audio jack for the audio cable"

If it had this, you wouldn't need the TTG.

Yes, 6CDs is okay, but at the very least they could have made the CD drive MP3 ready - that way you would have at least 600 songs and at least 30 hours of music.

Agreed.

Though when I've been straight with myself about my listening habits, the last few k miles I've done in the 355 (with Alpine head unit and iPod link) I've listened to a single playlist on random play. 3hrs of music in it. I think 6hrs (actually over 7 when I've crammed as much as I can on blank CD-Rs) won't be too much of a hardship.

See, making excuses for the damn car already - the look and sound of it do that to you

My dealer dropped me a line today to advise Gaydon has brought forward production of the 2008 spec which, amongst other changes discussed on this forum, will include an iPOD connection. Little late on the scene but nice to see Gaydon recognising the world has moved on from 6CD systems. My Roadster due for production August to replace my Coupe. Guessing (hoping) delivery for early September.

Hello Gents,
I'd heard so many bad comments on the "i-trip"....and only a few good comments (bad reception, fidley and i-pod doesnt charge) that I'd given up on the idea....UNTIL
I was in an Apple store in Los Angeles and spotted a device called a Roadtrip.
This device is actually pretty damn good. Its basically a cradle(bracket) into which your i-pod sits(adaptors for all versions of i-pods)....the cradle has a multi directional arm....which then slots into the cigarette lighter socket in your car. The multi-directional arm means it doesnt matter where your lighter socket is!

It is an FM modulator.....i.e tune it into a blank frequency that "hisses".....once tuned the "hissing" will stop.....hey presto youcan listen to your i-pod!
The advantages of the system are:
1)The I-pod is fairly stable in the cradle
2)The i-pod's screen is displayed
3)The i-pod "charges" whilst being used
4)If the frequency picks up a radio station....its straight-forward to re-tune
5)Sound quality is good.

Cost in the USA is about @$ 89.00 USD......about £45?
In Hong Kong they're about £35.
Not sure the price in the land of Stealth Taxes! See website ; www.griffintechnology.com/products

Good luck!

Morning Gents

I have an FM modulator fitted to my DB9. It's great........provided you have the windows down and are travelling over 40mph !!

Seriously - it's OKish. The reception can be variable and there is always some hiss - I only use it on long journeys on the motorway where wind/road noise negates any hiss issues.

As a matter of interest I keep the lead in the bits box on the centre console and have a T section velcroed to my pod which fits into the change/ticket slot in front - looks OK and can easily be stowed when not in use.

There is a firm that will do you a pukka installation but £2.5K was a bit rich for me!

All the best.

Have listened to a few FM solutions and have yet to find one I like - always get hiss etc.

Hopefully they'll do something sensible in terms of retro fit, but I strongly suspect the most sensible route would end up being simply to change the car. We'll see (meanwhile I'm still OK with the CDs).

Good tip Manx thank you. I bought one from the site as above, quick delivery from the retailer as highlighted. As yet not in the AMV8V because she is at the menders ( more of that later ) but I`ve installed it in the X5 and will post a picture tomorrow. Simple to install and sounds ok , it scores because it also charges the iPod unlike previous gadgets I`ve tried .Must go, have to watch Milan hammer the Reds and the wine is getting warm , have a seafood salad that can`t wait either , later guys.

Hi Mikial,
Glad to hear the tip was successful..........though I am yet to try my "Roadtrip" out in my new toy.......WEY HEY!!! PICKED IT UP TODAY!!!
An AMV8....in Tungsten Silver(2006)......absolutely gorgeous...from ANY angle.......sounds "eargasmic" (above 4500rpm - yet to find the fuse box with No22 ).
Sold my very nice Stuttgart made C4S.......NEARLY went down the "Prancing Horse" marque......but last minute opted for the VERY gorgeous Gaydon winged stunner!

The arms on the Roadtrip are adjustable....Im sure it'll adapt!
BTW - does anybody use a speed detector/Road Angel/Snooper type device in their AM?

Thanks gents.

Best wishes.

It's in the boot.

Right hand side, behind a carpeted flap, underneath the tyre foam/compressor.

20A fuse I believe. As you look at the box, fuse 1 is at the rear left corner. Count down the rear row etc. Easy enough to find (the numbers are also embossed on the panel, but you may need a torch to see them)
