Great to see quite a few PH'ers have taken the plunge. So what do you reckon, are EVO wrong and all the other mags right? or is the car good, but not quite great....?

Depends on what the owner driver wants. For my current requirements it's perfect - no complaints about the car at all*.
If I wanted a gutsy street/traffic light racer it's feeble and if I want something 'practical' to carry three mates it's crap.

Ignore ALL reviews and evaluate for yourself.

* Toyota dealers on the other-hand are pants. The three local to me are anyway.

Stick a renault badge on it and ECOTY 2012 smile Joking aside they never seem to like the cars I like anyway. I'd have another s2000 tomorrow if the insurance wasn't so stupid (and I didn't have a gt86) and I'd take a new 172 cup over any other renaultsport. I've had two trophys, tracked one of them and they never felt as raw or as fun as my 172 cup. Didn't like any of the mx5s I've driven. I had an evante which was a based on the s1 lotus elan and I loved that thing though.

Great car, great handling fast enough for me even in runnng in period. its a headturner no doubt about, not going to be the quickest from lights but round country lanes its a great little go kart biggrin

Presumably if they're being honest about the ecu needing a reflash because it has learnt from the first 100 miles, an aftermarket remap would solve the problem wouldn't it?

This is a second hand explanation from a friend who does diesel engine calibration so might not be quite right. As I understand it sensors tend to have a tolerance as built, so fully open on your throttle the position sensor might read 0.3V or 0.31V. The ECU uses a load of clever algorithms to work out what all the sensors are reading at what position so it can react correctly, i.e. 100% at pedal = move butterfly until TPS=0.31v.

The garage 'it learns your driving style' thing is meaningless, keeping the taps wide open everywhere doesn't get you onto the 'race' throttle map as there is only one map.

However on old cars (like my 2002 Bmw 330) some dirt can get into parts and suddenly full throttle is 0.34V, therefore its worth resetting the ECU so it can learn the new sensor values.

Love the 86s, will definitely consider one when an inevitable pushbike downgrade removes my current need for an estate.

I've only seen one in the flesh...and that's Alec's above, hi Alec wavey

Definitely on my list of next car to consider, Toyota/Subaru, not fussed which... Load of other metal on the list as well, so who knows where I'll end up.

Rare as hen's teeth on the roads I frequent...

Sales so far have been piss poor. New registrations in 2012 (with some competitors):

MX-5: 1,738
RCZ: 1,421
Boxster: 390
GT-86: 161

You have to factor in that the GT-86 has only been for sale for approx half the year so far, however halving the others sales numbers still results in GT-86 coming last. This is a pretty terrible sales figures for a car so hyped. The Boxster figures are low due to the old generation being phased out, I'd expect the new model to treble sales at least. As I predicted Toyota have fked up badly due to overpricing the car.

Here's mine, going from a Clio 200 to this, a great alternative rather than just seeking out more power i.e. jumping up to a Megane 265, it's very similar to the Clio yet refreshingly different. Loved the Clio, loving the GT86!!!

They may be cheaper in other countries but you don't get everything standard like you do here.

Six months is a bit strong. The first demos weren't here till June and first customer cars were August.

I imagine a 7 million car recall won't help toyota's cause though. hehe

Rest easy scratchchin your car is engineered and built by Subaru

My BRZ just back from Litchfield; more power, more noise and nicely executed

If the car remains low volume and rare, then that is fine with me; in fact last time I looked Subaru had only sold 1 SE spec BRZbiggrin
