All of a sudden my £300 shed has lost power on uphills.

As soon as you get to a hill it doesn't rev above 2k , drop it into 2nd with your foot flat down and it just crawls along.

There is oil in it , don't think it's clutch because then the revs would rise but the car wouldn't go any faster so what's my next culprit ? compression test?

Check clean throttle body. Also unplug MAF and see if it improves. If it does, there's your culprit.
You could try disconnecting the battery for an hour which clears any stored faults and see if it improved.

Oh - and what model/engine?

Could be a blocked exhaust / collapsed catalytic converter.

It's the 1.8 petrol engine.

Collapsed cat. converter sounds expensive I'd probably just sell the car on with the fault.

Thanks for both your replies.

That sounds like the airflow meter

I had a P11 and the airflow meter went twice. 40 odd pound from Euro car parts

Hmmmmm . . . . . Its a P12 then, On the 1.8 (QG18DE) it could be a stretched cam chain or the cam sensor too.

First port of call is try disconnecting the MAF (air flow meter) and see how it goes from there.
