Hi all,
Bit of a wild stab in the dark for advice:
I have recently taken delivery of a 12 month old 6500mile avensis saloon: 1.6d4d (BMW?) engine.

Struggling to get much more than 52mpg at the moment, on what I'd consider to be 'combined' type of routes. (And on which the computer in a 10yr old golf diesel would show 65+mpg!)

Salesman says I should expect less than the advertised mpg, because it's not been fully run-in yet. Should I believe him, or is something wrong?!

Any thoughts?!

Sounds about right TBH. You might see 55 mpg on longer motorway runs but 65 mpg is unrealistic unless you are driving like a saint downhill with a tailwind. A Golf might show better in the trip computer but fuelly data suggests owners true mpg isn't any better.

Good point: with hindsight, it may be fair to regard VWs figures with a certain skepticism, given their tendancy for not being entirely above board with environmental considerations.
