My Dad's 2017 Jazz sometimes won't start - normally after a run, not from cold.
The ignition lights are on but it doesn't fire up.

I discovered that if you let off the handbrake, and let the car roll - even just an inch forwards or backwards - it usually catches - sometimes takes a few goes.

Known fault?, or can someone point me in the right direction.

I would get the dealer to sort it, but with an intermittent fault......... so I'd like to be able to point them in the right direction, unless it's a fix I could do myself.

The car is fine with the auto stop/start, so I dismissed the starter motor as a culprit.

More info needed.
When you say it isn't starting - Is the immo light being switched off?
Is the starter motor turning?
I yes Is the engine cranking?

etc

Thanks for the reply.
Basically - key in ignition, turn key - dash lights on, turn further to crank engine....nothing, not even a click from the starter motor.
Starter motor does not turn, engine is not cranked.

Key returned to normal....release handbrake and let it roll. Reapply handbrake, turn key to crank - it fires up...sometimes only after the second or third time I allow it to roll.
Something to do with the handbrake???

More likely something to do with the starter motor. I'm thinking pre-engaged starter has a flat spot on the connections,as is not energising. Moving the car moves the starter motor past the flat spot, and will start normally. whistle just an idea.

Does it do this in only one spot, ie parked at home, or does it do it anywhere it's parked? I wonder if there is some radio interference from a phone mast. My old Civic did something similar in a service station. Never did it before or since.

Do you roll it in gear? If yes the starter might be sticking out/in and if you roll it in gear the engine turns and disengages the starter.

It has nothing to do with the handbrake.

It's a 2017 car, presumably then it still has a factory warranty on it.

In which case....

Loose connection to the starter solenoid ?

Rolling the car forwards makes the connection - long shot but might be worth a look

sorry y2017 - very unlikely
