Hey all,

Looking for some more information on these somewhat underrated super-sedans. Putting a kind of buying guide together seen as there isn't one on the PH main site.

Found a few starting to fall into my price range.

If anyone has any common issues, things to look out or even just some fun facts and features about the Mazda 6 MPS (Mazdaspeed 6) let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Having previously owned one for a couple of years I can think of a few of the more common issues. Mine was actually quite reliable other than a couple of minor bits.

Turbo oil seals - Towards the end of the turbo's life car will bellow white smoke after the car has been warmed up and sat idling for 5+ minutes. This has been attributed to too-high of an oil flow to the K04 turbo and can be partially remedied by fitting a restrictive 1mm banjo bolt to the turbo oil feed (original is 1.5mm). Drivers have reported failures from low milers so I think it depends on the state of tune and how the car has been driven more than anything.

Rear diff mounts - Known weak point and will fail after a good few years of abuse. The Corksport replacement is said to be long-lasting.

VVT Actuator - Another common fault with the MPS engines is the VVT actuator failing and allowing the chain to slack which could eventually kill the engine. The VVT rattle is very well documented and if picked up early enough can be sorted for around £400-600 depending on how handy you are or if a garage handles the work. Failures seem to average around the 60k mark.

Wheels corrode like there's no tomorrow

Rods are another weak point above normal tune. Anything near 300bhp on standard internals and the driver should be avoiding full throttle below 3krpm in the higher gears, these engines aren't revvers and the produce big torque numbers lower down in the rev range. The theory behind it is the higher the RPM the less time the pistons and rods are subjected to the high torque on the power stroke.

Rust - Usual jap car worries. Sils and reach arches are prone. A regular underseal should help

Worn oil seals generally create blue smoke, white is normally due to water rather than oil.
