I was reading up on the Altezza with the BEAMS 3S-GE engine, sounds perfect for me .... just need to find a wagon.

Wikipedia says they don't exist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexus_IS#Powertrain_...

Ebay says they do.....this is a wagon + BEAMS 2000
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-altezza-like-Lex...

That shonky eBay car may have had an engine swap.... but did they ever come in wagon + BEAMS?

Anyone seen another?

Have you looked on something like JDMauctionwatch or Goo-Net-Exchange?

Four coming up at auction, 1x JCE10W with the 3.0 JZ engine and 3x GXE10W

These GXE10W have IL6's and these are listed as having the 1G-FE engine as stated here: https://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car...

I'm going to go with "not from the factory" for wagons having Beams based on the above and it's only engine swaps which are available, but would love to be proven wrong smile

According to the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue, the Altezza Gita (equivalent to the Lexus IS Sportcross) was available with the 3S-GE.

The model codes are SXE10-AEAVF for the automatic and SXE10-AEFVF for the manual.

EDIT:
Scratch that.
I'd always been under the impression that the Gita was the wagon. No idea why I thought that, but it's incorrect. There were Gita sedans and wagons, as there were Altezza sedans and wagons.
Further research in the EPC doesn't find model code SXE10W-????? (W for Wagon), although GXE10W for the 1G and JCE10W for the 2JZ are listed.
In other words, there were 3S-GE engined saloon versions of the Altezza and the Gita, but no wagons.

Looks like it will have to be an engine swap. smile

The GXE10 model code indicates that it's a 1G engine.

See my edited post above.

Ah so where I made my mistake in my post after yours is that I just saw BEAMS on the engine cover in the picture in that ad and assumed it was the same engine as the 3S-GE but it's actually a 1G-FE?

There are a further 5 adverts showing engine pics for the Altezza that have the beams engine cover but the model codes are all GXE10...

SXE10 - 3S-GE engine as found in the RS200 version (saloon only)
GXE10 - has a beams moniker on the engine but is the 1G-FE
JCE10 - is the 2JZ

Sorry bit new to Toyota's but keen to expand my knowledge read

That's correct. The first part of the vehicle code is taken from the engine series code

For example, the Supra Mk4 code is JZA80
JZ = JZ engine (2JZ-GE or 2JZ-GTE)
A = model (Supra)
80 = model series

The Mk3 Supra was
MA70
M = M engine (7M-GE or 7M-GTE)
A = model (Supra)
70 = model series
or
JZA70
JZ = JZ engine (1JZ-GTE)
A = model (Supra)
70 = model series

(Not 100%, as you can see by the Altezza codes. Perhaps the "CE" code indicates that they had to modify the "XE" shell to take the JZ engine?)

Engine codes - e.g. 2JZ-GTE
2 = version
JZ = engine type - 1 or 2 letters
G = performance cylinder head (F = economy) - I think G is wide valve angle and F is narrow?
T = turbo (Z = supercharger, S = direct injection, not present = naturally aspirated)
E = electronic fuel injection

Brilliant thanks all.

Looks like I was mistaken and the eBay car I linked is a 1G-FE after all, I just thought all BEAMS were 3G-SE

This article: http://mywikimotors.com/toyota-1g/ shows the differences in the engines.

The normal 1G-FE has compression ratio 8.8, 140 HP at 5,750 rpm and 185 Nm at 4,400 rpm

The 1G-FE BEAMS has compression ratio 10, 160 HP at 6,200 rpm and 200 Nm at 4,400 rpm

So a useful dose of extra power but not as revvy and powerful as the 3S-GE.

The article says the 1G-FE BEAMS added VVTi - the standard car does not get VVTi?! Are ALL the Altezza / IS 2 litre sixes this later 160hp engine.... confused.... its probably the same as the UK spec IS200 so theres no power advantage in a JDM altezza.

Thanks I will lose the afternoon to this if not careful.

I'm after something with a n/a revvy 2litre ish 180-200 HP engine,but in a practical body (sedan boots are awkward)

A 3S-GE altezza wagon would have been perfect as its more practical and its RWD. Did they put that engine in anything approaching a euro hatchback?

Basically I want an S2000 with a hatchback, I might have to default to a civic type R or a celica 190, but they are fwd.

Ooh found a Caldina Active Sport GT, that has a 3S-GE.

Its no looker..... none for sale on goo, just the GT-T turbo charged ones. And none in the UK....

Basically its an avensis, so not holding out much hope for the handling.

Not quite. It's a 3GR-FSE. smile

Oh rubbish, thanks for the correction Gareth.

That Caldina has 5 up for auction, chassis code ST215W, sorry again if I've got the engine all wrong? Quite high mileage on those. Or the later ST246W with fewer miles?

OP: do any of these float your boat? The engines are going to be more low end torquey and not as frenetic as the beams/S2000.

Toyota Crown (engine is probably too big) http://goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/TOYOTA/CROWN_...

Toyota Mark II Blitz http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/TOYOTA/MA...

Mazda Atenza (Mazda 6 over here) http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/MAZDA/ATE...

(Never heard of this)
Nissan Avenir http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/NISSAN/AV...

Toyota Mark II Qualis http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/TOYOTA/MA...

Nissan Stagea (probably abit too juicy fuel wise) http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/NISSAN/ST...
the 260RS version of this has links to the running gear of the Skyline GTR's.

Hmmm... this makes them sound interesting https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a9549/toy...

I wonder why develop a car for europe then not sell it here.

I looked at the Caldina, seemed ideal but the 4 speed auto put me off frown

They did a manual in the older shape

Yeah the 4sp would put me off too, like the older Chaser's etc they seemed to hold onto that transmission for so long! frown

4sp ones' basic specs: http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/catalog/TOYOTA__CA...

http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/TOYOTA/CA...

Older 5sp manuals:

Really shows up how bland all Euro manufacturer's ranges are, take a look at Toyota.jp and even the current offering is such a healthy mix of fun shapes and cars for different uses. Can even get a Prius with a bodykit for no reason! laugh

Those are fine cars I'm sure but relative to something like an impreza WRX wagon its probably not worth the expense of importing.

If there was something with a great revvy n/a 4cyl engine, preferably rear wheel drive with a dose of practicality I'd be up for importing.

Mazda Rx8 might be worth a shout. Not without its issues but rwd, non turbo etc etc

I know they are not RWD but you can get a few Toyota's with the 2ZZ in estate form. The Will VS has 190bhp but fwd. Same with the Corolla Fielder.

The older Caldina GT can come in NA form too with the 190bhp 3S-GE engine and 4wd.

And oddly the Rav 4 came with a form of the Beams engine too smile

I think I'm getting into this. I think I need to be more obscure.

Behold the TOYOTA SPRINTER CARIB BZ TOURING with a 4A-GE on throttle bodies with a 6speed manual.

http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/TOYOTA/SP...

165ps and 1130kg must give me a 0-60 of about 7 seconds?

Kind pricey though.

See also the TOYOTA COROLLA TOURING WAGON BZ TOURING

http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/TOYOTA/CO...

Which appears to be the same but different.

As they are BZ - so they have superstrut (and therefore handle well)?

You defo are, I've lost countless hours on that site! That BZ Touring looks amazing to me out of those two, it might be nearly £5k in Japan there but it's only done 20k :O

This one comes with silver highlights lol http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/TOYOTA/CO...
