Hi all, not usually on this forum!!, My cousin has a 1993 WRX STI which has had loads done to it. i.e. exhaust/motech ecu/a.p. brakes, can't say much more as I haven't a clue what I am on about!!! Anyway recently the engine went so he had a new one fitted which was fine but did not run as well as the old one, no where near as quick and ran a little lumpy. Recently it has got much worse and seems to be badly over fuelling, on tick over it has a bad misfire which does not clear till about 3000 revs. When misfiring it also puts quite a lot of smoke out!!. Is this just a case of needing a good tuning/set up or something more???, If so where would you reccommend it to be done??, I know he rang GGR but they wanted £800 to set it up and he thought this was a bit steep!
cheers
Richard

So its had the engine out and a "new" one put in....
Right.
First things first, If you or your mate is a little handy with the spanners and know where everything is, id start initially by going over ALL the induction pipes, to check for non-tightend hose clips, or non-fitted/loose vac/boost pipes.
Check the clamps for tightness, as if theyre loose, at all, you can get lean running problems etc etc(cant remember if scoobs have an air flow meter..doh).
Then check for loose wiring, multiplugs not fitted, or not fitted correctly, etc.
Its my guess, and a fairly good one, that somewhere along the line, theres a problem such as the one ive described.
It seems the most likely thing to me, as even with the best of intentions, sometimes us mechanical geniuses "forget" things...gulp(admission).
If still no joy, check the spark plugs, if theyre off the original engine then ok, they shouldnt be a problem if they were ok.
If none of the above even makes any difference, id say there may be a problem with the "new" engine, maybe a timing belt misalignment or mechanical fault such as low compression etc.
Itd be pointless taking it in for a "setup" if theres any problems like the ones ive related to you.
You need to and MUST check the things ive said first, to stand any chance of fixing this.
Too many places will charge you the £800 quid you said for just fitting back a loose pipe, trust me, i know, ive worked in the tuning trade.
Best of luck with this one, and feel free to ask more questions if you need to, theres a wealth of knowledge on here from all the contributors.

You could also try these people;

I have heard nothing but good reports from all my friends who have used them. There based in Bicester if the location helps at all.
