Hi guys,

A couple of questions on the BMW 'enhancement'
- For X5/X6 owners who have had this done - was it free of charge or did you pay for labour.
- For 3 series owners (like me) who have registered for the 'enhancement' will this be free of charge?

I forgot to clarify this when I spoke to BMW.

Cheers,

SlowDriver

I believe the software upgrade/enhancement (whatever) is free of charge regardless of model,as long as BMW regard it as being affected.

My X5 has been "enhanced"....it was free of charge and they even cleaned it.

Has anyone completed a 'hard' fix for this yet?

I want to buy a 535d touring early next year as I can't think of anything even close to being as good for the job as it.

I don't want to to BMW to get a software fix which someone will find a way to circumvent.

So... Wiring fix?

^^I think the easy solution is to just move the obd plug.
I keep meaning to do this,it's on my to list somewhere.
For now I have the disklok on.

Ok. New X5 40d ordered for November delivery. Will be parked off the street behind a locked gate. Good deal. Will replace in a couple of years when the new model arrives.

We will have had a free X5 40d M Sport from BMW for four and a half months by the time the new one arrives. They have treated us well. I think they've also learned a lesson.

Lots of people early on (myself included- took about 1 hr) added switches to obd wiring or moved the socket, see earlier posts

She wanted it! She's been driving the BMW-supplied one for two and a half months and likes the range it gives.

To be honest, it's not that much slower in the real world than the petrol one, so I can live with it.

Just received this from my insurer.

[i]Dear Reardy Mister,

You may have seen in the news recently that some BMW car models are unfortunately affected by a security flaw. As a customer and owner of a BMW we wanted to make you aware of this so you can take the necessary precautions and help prevent thefts of BMWs.

BMW has advised that the security breach only affects models which were built from 2006 to September 2011.

The security flaw lies with the electronic key. A device now exists which enables its user to access a car's on-board computer and program a blank key. In the wrong hands, a thief can steal a BMW in just a few minutes using the device.

How you can reduce the threat of car theft:

BMW has announced that they will offer a free upgrade of security features for cars affected. Therefore we would recommend that you contact your BMW service department or your nearest BMW dealer who will be able to advise you further.

Visit the BMW website to find out more.

Yours sincerely

The fuss we made as a motoring community has no doubt helped, we should be pleased about that. It does make me wonder what my insurers actual position is on it now. If I don't take it because my local stealer intends to charge a fortune, will they consider that I didn't take enough steps to protect my car?

Called my dealer regarding this. The response was "At the moment we have not been told of any software update avaialble for your vehicle. At this stage we are only performing upgrades to X5s and X6s. BMW are working on it and if anything else comes out, we will be contacting people."

I asked if that was the case for all dealers and she said yes.

So, according to my local service centre, there is nothing available for my 2008 325i coupe.

I asked my dealer about my 2011 Z4. Same situation. I took it to mean something will become available at a later date - month or 2 was how I read it.

Which dealer said that Garyhun? My dealer told me 6 weeks for my BM as HQ had not released it on other models yet. From this forum it seems that if you are between Mar 07 - Sep 11 you will need an update!

these have already started selling well. 1 series version to be released very soon.

moving the obd can void warranty and also cause future MOT issues!

Fit and forget, we found impossible to gain access to the OBD even with tools with just the window open.

I beliee the X5 and X6 have been updated for door door security. If i am right the big BMWs had a flaw in the door lock like the old golfs and leons.

We can test whether they have stopped the EDILOCK programmer if anyone wants to pop down to us.

Disklok is a minor inconvenience but a great visual FRO! to potential scrotes. Downside is that it may mark the leather wheel. All said, I'd rather have a marked wheel and my car than broken window and or worse.
I was concerned with this when I started using a Disklok on my 135i.

As a result, I popped into my local DIY store, picked up some one-sided adhesive foam padding (often used to pad doors/doorways against draughts ...), cut that into strips and affixed them to the inside of the Disklok.

No more marking of the wheel or making indents into the rubber. Works a treat.

The slight indentation you get from the disclok goes after a day of the disklok being left off ... the mark is not permanent ...

Re Disklock - may sound a bit odd, but I get an old pillowcase slide it over the steering wheel and then fit the thing. Works fine & no risk of any scuffs or marks.

Mate of mine has an X5 that was updated earlier this week. I was interested to hear that the dealer had to remove a speaker he has installed in the passenger footwell to access a socket on that side (was what they told him). Clearly there is more to this "update" than just plugging into the OBD for a few hours - anyone shed any light on that?

(Cheeky fkers tried to charge him £90 labour to remove 4 screws and lift the speaker out - he told them where to shove that!)
