i'm fitting the aFe tonight, i will report back... smile

after being told by two yocal engineers that it couldn't be fixed i'm pleased to say i'm managed to get the intake pipe fixed at a more specialist engineers...they specialise in food manufacturing equipment and i dropped in that i work for one of the largest food manufacturers in the country...

let you know what i think hopefully tomorrow...must say i wish now i'd just bought a new one, the 2nd hand effort with a week's use has so far cost me £35 in repairs, £10 in new bolts (to replace the missing ones!) and half a day being spent gassed in the loft of my garage whilst i spray the air box as the 'powder coat' was flaking off round the edges.

so fingers crossed it'll make a good noise...
So....does it?

well...

Firstly...problems:
Getting the lugs off that hold the original air box on, they are like a mensa challenge.
The quality / fit of the intake is not great, the connection to the engine is a little 'strained' for a bespoke kit..it's the sort of installation where everything needs putting in place and connecting before you tighten it all up.

Other than that very pleased, throttle response is sharper, such that it sort of feels like you're in sport mode when you're not, didn't push on in sport mode as i only went for a spin round the block but it felt a lot sharper.

the sound is not as loud as i expected lower down in the rev range but there is a nice rich roar upwards of 4k.

i got the kit for £180, had to pay £30 to get a bodge (called an 'alternative installation' by the belgian who sold it, after i queried why the f*cked threads weren't mentioned in his advert) fixed and a further £10 on anodised fairing bolts to replace the missing ones that weren't sent (it looks a bit utilarian so spruced it up with a bit of gold anodising!), so £220, the rest of it is like brand new though, i reckon he bodged it trying to fit it and took it off for that reason. I wouldn't pay upwards of £300 for it new, but given it's apparent contribution to fuel efficiency i don't think it's a bad mod for those moments when you want a bit more roar under your foot.

do K&N do an induction kit for the Z4? as in reality is is nothing more than that with a box round the cone..

Sounds like a bit of a mission!!

Think I will go for the traditional cone if I do anything at all induction wise! But still, do let me/us know how things are once you push the sport button!!

Good for you! I'm trying to get rid of the modifying bug as I'm supposed to be saving up for weddings / honeymoons....oh and Le Mans biggrin

I'm all with you on driving though - hopefully the rain will stay away for a while now - except when I could be cleaning the car. I hate cleaning my car, it's the one time you get really up close and personal with the paintwork and relaise some pleb has tried to push a trolley past your car or slammed their door into the side of your car furious

Well.. they're certainly not getting any cheaper and there doesn't seem to be much out there for me and my list of spec. I must admit; have been looking at 350Z's also, however I'm still not totally sure what I'm after. Its going to be a 3.0L next whatever it may be!

Its got to be a V6 GT. Half the mileage of the Z's and less money and up on power...

I looked at a couple of them. You can't really compare them with the pram top - that compares with the Coupe which is a better steer in my opinion.

It is nearly a 10 year old car too that one. Fun for mods. Watch out or clutch life though and fuel economy will be plenty worse!

Okay Lund, in fairness the market is a bit light on 3.0i examples which you'd want....bad time of year to be buying. Wait a little longer until after the summer and get yourself a 3.0si model biggrin

Holy thread revival Batman!

Okay, so my girlfriend has gone & I no longer need a diesel to commute across the country! Winters up and coming, good time to buy? It's back on (although it more than doubles my insurance!)

  • 3.0l AUTO, < 70,000m, Xenon's, Heated Seats, Parking Sensors, £6-7K > Hit me! biggrin
