Late at night, M1 pretty much empty. Time to get to grips with some speed? Well, yeah, kind off.

Chose to flick on cruise from Heathrow to home in Yorkshire at a steady 70mph. Not done this before but wanted to see if my N54 335i could do better than my regular 26.x mpg. Turns out it can, and by some considerable margin.

Anyone else done better?

Got pretty much that driving my 335i from Coventry to Devon.

Best I've had out of the 530i was 39.7 (verified that the old fashioned way too - I brimmed the tank at the start and end of the trip) from Plymouth to Bristol.

That's impressive for a 300bhp petrol really. My 728i gets similar mpg at 70mph bit has just under 200bhp and smaller capacity. I did a 140 mile trip the other day with a few roundabouts at a cruise of 77 and got 34.6.

From the photo it appears that the engine is stone cold, so I assume you took it some time after your economy run...?

Yeah, I tried to take a picture on my Blackberry when I got home at 1am but the flash made it impossible to see and without the flash enabled it was too dark to make out the figures. I took the pic the next morning; right before knocking the mpg back close to where it usually lives.

Wonder what the discrepancy between indicated and actual mpg might be. Next long trip I'll be finding out.

Bloody hell. My E91 330d (manual) is showing 35.6mpg average over the last 1000 miles or so, with no urban driving whatsoever.

I've done the Reading to central Manchester with cruise at 70moh for m way in the E90 330d auto did c55mpg and that's the uneconomical 231bhp lump.

OP good effort also how come you have an oil temp gauge wish I had one. Also lovely to see it can rev to 7k

One question is this the Sequential turbo or single turbo?

welsh beef - not sure about oil temp on E90's but i'm guessing the later cars have them, i know all E9x M3's have an oil temp gauge.

if you want to view coolant and oil temp it's pretty easy to do, you just need to access the "hidden menu" on the OBC. pretty straight forward and you can get loads of data.

for me, the most useful being coolant and oil temp....though i think the oil temp sensor in my car has had it as it sometimes goes from 90 degrees or more to -10 and anywhere in between in a few seconds hehe

Would love to know oil temp before I give it the beans.

6 cylinder petrol engined cars have an oil temp guage. Diesels and 4 pots don't.

you need to translate the page to english, google chrome does that for me. it's really simple to do. let me know how you get on! you need to go to test number 19 first and enter the last 7 digits of your chassis number together to unlock it (e.g. if it ends in 12345 it's 1+2+3+4+5=15)

Hi Welshbeef. This 335 has the twin turbo N54 engine. Lovely car to drive quickly but also fine at a more sedate pace. And as its the SE its nice and plain aside from the twin pipes sticking out of the back. Give it the beans and it'll shift though and that does catch out the unwary.

Re oil temp, I got back from Heathrow at 1am and couldn't get a good pic to upload, so got one the next morning. Oil temp is a super useful addition to the instruments. Although waiting for the oil to get up to temperature can sometimes feel like an age!

That's bloody good.

I get 42mpg from my 123d! Hence local job coming and a petrol to be bought. Was after a 335i, but going to give up on that and look at 330i or something else.

How many coffees or cans of Red Bull did you have to keep you awake driving that far at 70 ? I've tried 70 a couple of times and lasted about 5 mins.
My 335i N54 did 37.7 ( car fully warm, on the flat )

On a European trip (at European speeds) - 2,500 miles of mostly motorway, but some urban driving, my e46 330Ci managed 35.8 mpg - I was bowled over.

Not as much as my 645ci though which reported 34mpg on a cruise the other day!! Somewhat shocking, and probably partially thanks to some roadworks meaning some of it was at 60 rather than 70, but still!!

These cars I think are fantastic for what they are. Just look through the long-termers section in Evo or any magazine, I regularly see people getting 20s in a hot hatch, let alone a luxurious big coupe that weighs 50% more!

But what is the point having a 335i and an empty motorway and only doing 70!?

Might as well have a 316d

I get similar figures from the e89 (Z4) 35i which has the same engine as the 335i. I can get high 30's on a run provided I stick to circa 65mph but of course how many people do that? I don't, so usually end up with an average of just over 30mpg on a long run. I get 24mpg kicking around town/the commute which is bad in general terms but for the engine/power, I think is quite good. It certainly stopped me going to a Porsche that gets 28mpg combined (official which means probably less in real life) and double the road tax for similar power. Now I've addressed the (far too many for a premium brand) niggles, this car still makes me smile. I'm not sure I'd have kept it if it were a smaller engine.

Timely topic - I drove about 70 miles yesterday in my 335i but we were early leaving so instead of arriving early I slowed right down. Averaging 65 on the motorway and 50 through the average cameras, I managed to squeeze 45mpg average out of it across the 70 miles.

Amazing engine - go anywhere near its performance though and the MPG plummets! Across 20k miles of mixed driving I've averaged 30.3 MPG.
