25 around town is a bit on the low side. I'd expect around 29/30. At 70 around 40 is about right. If I can keep it under 60 (only when av. Speed cams force me too) for extended periods then pushing 50 is doable. If you go for it up towards 90 then it hits the economy hard though, pushing you back down to 30 ish.
I had a similar decision to make as the OP.
Always financed a new/nearly new car in the past but in Sept 2011 decided to purchase a 55 plate 730D.
Paid around £11k for a car with mid-50Ks on the clock and done 20K in the past 10 months.
Had safety items (rear pads and brake fluid) changed at the dealers, put four new tyres on it.
Did an oil change myself at the end of December (simple as can be) and just about to change oil, filter and air cleaner element this weekend.
Get around 40mpg.
As another poster has said, if I can get three years out of it, spending £500 a year on maintenance and then sell for a couple of grand I think I will have done OK financially whilst having a very nice car to drive around in, over that time.
