My E82 has now done 203K miles, I've had nothing engine related go wrong at all and just had the normal interval servicing (normally gone a bit over tbh)

Getting a bit nervous now though!!

I'm not so sure now that the oil plays that much of a part. I stripped an M52 engine last week for bits (mid nineties) and the timing chain could be used to tow a coach with it's so beefy, plus it was unworn after nearly 200k. The later N Series chains are like something on a Chinese exercise bike or a toilet flush by comparison.

Mine wasn’t done, enquired with bmw, they said my car wasn’t affected, and have it in writing just in case

Is an 07 320d with 161bhp likely to have M47 or N47?

Bit of further reading revels that yeh it should be M47, downwards turned exhaust, sans DPF too which is good, N47 came in on 57.

Hopefully going to see a 07 320d Tourer.

N47 came out on the 1/3 in 03/07 I think.

Yeah, the E9x change over wasnt as clear cut as the LCI as the OP says. There are cars out there with the newer engine in a pre LCI car, but the easiest way to sport the differences is as you say, the down turned exhaust.

Hi all,

Good post. Just alerted myself to this issue after my E92 320d 57 plate started making a subtle sound about a year ago, but I've more recently taken it seriously. Two mechanics think I'm hearing things that aren't there, but it is definitely apparent compared to over a year ago. Is the chain issue noise very obvious?

Just gone over 96,000 miles, no problems other than changing steering column. Serviced according to CBS - will do more frequent oil changes from now on. Fantastic car otherwise.

Hi all,

Just bought a 57 Plate 118d with 51,000 miles.
No strange noises to report. Car has been serviced as per BMWs ridiculously long service intervals.
I was worried about this after only realising timing chain issues after I'd put a deposit down but my mind is at ease now.
I'd assume this car has done a lot of start stop mileage around town (due to low mileage/age). but no noise from the timing chain as I say.

Will be changing the oil on a yearly basis from now on (8000 miles).

Hi guys, looking at buying a 520d, found a lovely example but I have concerns regarding the timing chain issues. I have found out the vin and contacted two different BMW dealers who have said there is no outstanding recalls on that vehicle.

Is it safe to assume that the vehicle will be fine? Neither dealer would elaborate on that.

It’s an N47, might be fine, might not be.

My colleague in the Netherlands has just sold his 2007 120d fitted with an N47 - it was on 300000km when he sold it, no timing chain issues reported.

It wouldn;t rev above 3000 rpm due to a DPF issue, but the timing chain was fine....
