I opted for the power tailgate on a new f31 330d touring. 3 times I have left the house to find the tailgate open. Once overnight whilst raining, luckily nobody got in or swiped anything.
I'm thinking I'm accidentally pressing the boot release button in the house with the keys in my pocket, but I don't recall them being in my pocket all 3 times. Otherwise, it must be a wiring issue or something.
Has anybody else had this happen?

I've had similar with the boot of my F30 - absolutely certain it's pocket button pressing; tend to take the key out of my pocket if the car is close enough I could do it, I think it's pressing something else in the pocket against the button.

Mine popped open whilst the key was in my pocket, luckily I was looking out of the window as the time. Didn't ever occur with my Volvo with a powered lid nor my e91 which has a similar key but no power tailgate of course.

Happily you can close the boot again by holding down the same button. Neighbours just thought I was being a dick I think :-)

Ghost in the Machine...

I had my X5 do that only with the windows.
Geezer comes in the pub and says its pissing down out there and you left your windows open.
yeah like I'm falling for that going out and getting soaked.
Sure enough hour later and I find all the windows open and a damp car frown

I am taking the keys out of my pocket all the time now. The first time it did it, the car was 2 days old and the boot was up all night. There was condensation throughout in the morning, I had to leave the air con on for an hour to get rid of all the moisture. I bet they don't test for that pre launch.
I'll be keeping my eyes on it now to see if it was my numpty pocket pressing or something else.

Yep, happened to me via keys in pocket and me bending down or leaning over to get something while in the house. I am thinking about getting one of those BMW leather key fob sleeve things to stop this happening.

IIRC from reading the manual on mine (albeit not an F31 nor with electric tailgate), I believe you can programme the boot to only open once the car has been unlocked, as opposed to just opening straight away on the boot release button on the fob - not fool proof, but may help against accidental operation?

Has happened to me a few times on my F31, I'm nearly certain the button was'nt pressed.

The car was back at the dealers a few months ago for a software upgrade- I mentioned what happened- they could'nt find a problem. On checking the new upgrades the tailgate was mentioned on the "list" though. It has behaved itself since.

Maybe try the above if you hav'nt already.

Cheers.

Hi have powered tailgate on 5 GT for last 2 years - never happened. I have noticed that I can only operate the tailgate once I have unlocked the car first so I guess this would need 'double' pocket pushing to work. Do the newer key fobs work in the same way or can you simply open the boot with only one press when the car is locked ?

My Dad has had the same problem a couple of times with his F31 320i, once in the rain too(though it stayed dry inside!). He put it down to accidental button pressing.

I’ve got a MY16 340i without the power boot option.

In the 16k mikes I’ve driven so far, the weird ‘find the boot open’ has happened overnight about 4 times and randomly whilst I’ve left the car while shopping about 2 times.

I’m about 95% certain none (or only the first at a push) of these instances relates to me - after it happened once I’ve been extra cautious with the key and leave it in a drawer well out of range of the car over night. ...still happens!

The car is due for it’s first service now, so I’ll seek a software update as mentioned above to fix it! They need to recalibrate the sports dials too, as I’ve had the sound and Performance Pack fitted and the dials don’t go high enough when you plant your foot to the floor (you go beyond the 320 / 560 limits on the old calibration).

I have comfort access - the cover you mention has been a godsend.
