With hindsight, my question was a stupid one - of course it couldn't do both as the struts are in a completely different place.

I do have a spare wheel well (without wheel as it happens) but have the front strutted, gate-fold configuration. Seems odd that there were two varieties of strutted boot floor but it seems there are!
Didn't we establish yours was grandad spec? That's your Trilby and spare tissue box cupboard.

Clearly the wring size and shape for a tissue box. That's more likely to be for spare rubber feet for his walking stick.

It seems like there are a few 5-Series beards here.

Can anyone tell me exactly what engine it is in a 540i E60?
I've just heard of them - I was completely unaware of it before and I'm curious.
Some small and inferior v8. Probably from the BMW parts bin of unused engines.
It's a 300hp although I am not sure of the cc, maybe 4.4. I don't think it can be upgraded to 550i performance by changing a few parts like you can turn a 125i into a 130i.

I have never understood this decision by BMW. They decided to give North America (big fans of V8 cars) a 300hp option and gave them the six cylinder 535i (an E60 with a 335i turbo engine) to sit alongside the 528i and 550i.

Yet in Europe market we got the 540i, a smaller V8 with less performance and only marginally better fuel consumption than the 550i.

I would have though it should have been the other way around and Europe get the 535i. You could get 550i performance with a simple stage 1 remap, and get well into the 400+ hp range with a few parts and a stage 2.

It's a real shame we didn't get the 535i as I think they would have sold quite a few.

I just found the racking under my boot floor, like the eBay car biggrin

And I had an electronic tyre pump in there - winning!

I believe the 540i was indeed the 4.4, like the e39 540i and the e60 545i, confusingly!

No idea why it had less power!?

I've decided I need more power... Supercharger time!?

Nope that's not right.

The first V8 E60 was the 545i which is a 4.4 N62B44.

Then in 05 it was replaced by two V8s, a 540i which is (bizarrely for BMW) actually the correct designation and is a 4 litre. And also everyone's favourite the 550i which is the N62B48 4.8.

What's this - I dont have it?

I've got these divides under the floor that are actually quite useful !

Then under that floor I've an empty spare wheel well with more divides in.

When i lose the runflats I'll chuck a space saver in.

I briefly looked at the S6...

I thought it was too much of a sideways step for more money.

I can't see them been that much quicker, and I don't really like Audis.

Well I am so tempted to get that motor. It's not that far from me. Only there are a few problems:
1) Although I can get the cash out of savings, it is in currently in savings
2) Wasn't planning on changing for another 8 months.
2) The current car only gets used every now and again and the other half won't be impressed if I have 2 cars that only get used every now and again.

Guess I'll just have to wait until the next ones pops up.

Correct and to add to this, although never offered in the E60, in the E65 the 735i was a 3.6 version of the N62 so even more choice in that venerable lump.

Well I guess I will just have to put that in my (cherry wood) pipe and smoke it :-)!

I do remain genuinely perplexed that bmw could offer two types of boot floor both of which seem to require roughly the same hardware and basically do the same thing ie provide storage. I'll get over it though. Now who's seen my Werthers....

Research completed, it seems Grandad has the storage pack option. Lucky me!

In actual fact and funnily enough I also have a heated steering wheel, something I haven't seen even on massively specced cars. That's true grandad spec.

Apologies all frown

I did read about one the other day... The guy was probably lying!

Makes sense it wouldn't be the same as the 545i but then the e39 540i was a 4.4, right?

It was yes, but that was an M62 engine, interestingly the first E38 740's were a 4.0 variant of the M60 as used in the E34 540i. In this case the E39 535i (only saloon no touring) and E38 735i were 3.5 M62. (there was also 4.6 and 4.8 models for X5 4.6is and the 4.8 was used in the Alpina's I believe and of course the 4.9l version used in the E39 M5, but that was an S62)

In the E60/61/63/64/65 they are all N62 engines and from a different family.

Good bearding.

I thought the 550i shared its engine with the X5 4.8iS, the hp and torque figures are very similar.
