I'm pretty sure we went through this way, way back in this thread as I remember looking for the knob (yet can't remember if I have it) and seeing the auto levelling against the garage doors after we discussed it.
And what did we conclude?

It's a check function. The LCM will request the lamps lower and then raise when the ignition is switched on. If they are unable to fully lower and then raise it will log an error code. It's the same with the flaps in the HVAC system and other such systems. Older models do this too.

Sorry ATM - I always seem to miss your replies first time round!

I have the light-levelling scroll knob thing as I adjusted them last night as they were set a bit low.

Mine also seem to auto-level at start-up.

But I don't have xenons (I believe).

My touring has no zenons and no adjustment knob. I was under impression if suspension is self leveling then light does not need adjustment as car should always maintain same level and therefore lights never need to go up or down.

SE gets my vote. Think that one has made an appearance before on the thread.

I don't blame you. Having now looked at the Sport one, I also swear that's a former car from here too!

Check for oil leaks, get on your hands and knees and look under the car. If there's oil, don't assume a quick and easy fix.

Patrick has the 45 engine and I'm not sure if this is prone to leaks but my 50 engine has never had a leaking problem. It does burn oil via the weepy valve stem oil seals and I'd say this is a more common problem as it affects all of these engines. The only engines which are ok are those which have been repaired or replaced under warranty. Otherwise they all do it. Mine has been doing it for at least 3 years or for me since i got it. To check just let it warm up in a drive and then leave it idling for a good few minutes and then it wil either just start smoking a bit or you need to blip the throttle to see the smoking.

So what else I'd suggest the auto box needs some consideration and I'd of thought patrick would have mentioned this as his is proving troublesome. A recon box is 2 grand and not something you want to consider with a car of this price. I gave mine some new fluid and it feels much better. Some may have had this done already. BMW used to say these are sealed for life then changed their tune a few years ago. Just the gearbox oil is 200 quid to buy.

What else err not sure if there is anything specific. It's a relatively cheap proposition 2nd hand considering what you get - that's what i think. The 50 engine is awesome.

Enjoy

Agree with this and my V8 4.8 X5 used to leak oil, and I believe it's pretty commonplace on that engine.

Have that in my watch list; great spec and price Vs. mileage.

Definitely look for any leaks, listen for any creaks and make sure it drives straight and true and all the electrics work.

Have a good look through the service history and check the brakes and tyres if you can.

Using the government MOT tool suggests it has had a bit of a hard life with respect to tyres: https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

There is nothing too worrying there but it may have been ragged a bit or owners haven't been great at looking after it.

I assume they'll have the same rocker cover and upper timing cover gaskets, not sure on the other differences.

Makes the two I WAS going to look at today seem positively overpriced!
Had car trouble on the way up, so no viewings until the end of the month.
It has also just occurred to me that I've posted I the E61 post and I'm looking at E60s- Doh!
