640d - do I renew my warranty
Discussion
Firstly, Merry Christmas PH
Secondly, I have a 2011 640d bought earlier in the year from BMW under their approved used car scheme. It comes with a 12 month manufacture warranty and so far it's been great, replaced front discs & pads £600, the EGR cooler which I'm guess was expensive & the cameras & module of the surround view system, again, I'd imagine pretty expensive.
So my question is, should I renew the warranty.
Cost, £740 pa - £250 excess or £890 - £100 excess
Mileage is 56k, I'm doing 25k pa
It's a complex car and plenty that could potentially ruin me

Generally I don't pay for warrantys, the business model only works if they are bad value for the consumer, for me you are paying for peace of mind, how much is this worth to you? However, in you case you are already up on the deal so have covered the next couple of years plus your car seems prone to issues so I'd say probably renew.
As I say personally I would save the money for a slush fund but when I buy a car, reputed reliability is quite high on the must have list.

I've had my F10 535d for over two years now it came with a 2 year AuC BMW warranty.
Sole thing replaced was a glow plug.
As it happens I've not renewed ... fingers crossed.

£90 a month is one thing, £140 is another.
I guess it doesn't give me much confidence with BMW wanting that much to guarantee the car
I plan to keep it for 4 years, if I opt for the warranty for the first few, it would be Sod's law failure will happen towards the end of my ownership and when the car is much older & worn. Then perhaps it may be better to save from day one

£1400 year isn't a lot of cash for peace of mind that could easily throw a bill like that if it were to st itself badly. I suppose it depends on just how good the warranty is, but I'd probably stick with it.
BMW or Merc etc Warranties really are top draw. I've never paid for them though - I go with the view get all niggles sorted before it expires then take a chance.
