What engine in an E36 318is coupe?

As title, what engine do they run? M42 or M44? I need the running gear for my project BMW 2002

The E36 318iS has a 1.9 DOHC 16v 140BHP M44 engine.

M42's (1.8) were fitted until early 1995 when the 1.9 litre M44 took over. Both excellent engines.

This engine swap is well documented in 2002 circles, but it seems the M42 age cars are a little easier to work with as they're not as complex and without obd2.

I'll keep em peeled for an early 318is.
