My 550i cost me less to insure than my current e46 330d, the wheels were smaller, servicing cost peanuts and the VED for me was low as pre March 2006. And it barely depreciated over 3 and a half years.
None of that applies to an F Series V8 though. It didn't cost me anything to run in that period other than fuel at 25mpg. I was never all that fond of it which was surprising given how much I loved my E39 V8s. I found it lacking in character, in pace, and in the handling department and in hind sight should probably have bought a B5 or M5.
These cars need adaptive drive, which I have in the 2013 F01 730d M Sport that replaced it. The adaptive 7 series out handles the passively sprung F10 and is in my opinion a much better car all round. Build quality is noticeably better much like the E65 before it. I've never driven a 750i but my experience of the F10 puts me off even trying.
To redeem myself for this uncomfortable pro diesel chat I'm pleased to say that if the 550i offered anywhere near the joy of the petrol lump in the missus new M240i then I'd probably still have it!
I've done 15k miles on the 730d and it hasn't cost me a penny either (circa 50k now) but as much as I'm very pleased with it I do look forward to moving it on for a G11. M760li would be nice!
