A friend of mine is looking for a hot hatch for 10k or less. He has owned a Mini Cooper, but fancies a change.

He has considered a

Corsa VXR
Fiesta ST
Honda Civic Type R

Any others that you could recommend please?

Not sure if the TT counts as a hatch. I had a mk1 240 QS, awesome. It doesn't look as girly as other mk1 TT's, handles like a go-kart and goes like **** off a shovel.

Alternately the 3.2 litre one looks great and sounds amazing too. If you can get one in the rare colours of Papaya and the camo green one, then you will have a lovely rare example.

Really? I test drove a Mk 1 TT 240BHP ish and it had lots of grip but felt really really heavy vs a hot hatch. I was driving a Mk2 Focus ST 225bhp at the time and that's not exactly the most nimble hot hatch to compare it to.

I recon the 180/200bhp Ecoboost Fez ST would be a good shout though but getting one for 10K limits your options a lot.
Type R - I own an FN2 (space ship one) and it handles well, not quite as fast as the Fez ST but much more boot and passenger space and it can do 8500 rpm :-) :-) :-)

So are MR2 roadsters apparently, but after owning one I'd say they are the most fun you can have with your clothes on. My Brother in law agreed they were a real drivers car but would never buy one as he'd get so much stick from the guys from work confusedconfusedconfused

haha I get it. I never wanted one until I saw the 240 QS, it looks way more aggressive than the other mk1 TT's

I am sure the OP wont struggle to find anything.

Isn't this true of all hot hatches too?

Lets face it, the hatchback exists purely for practicality reasons. To maximise space on the inside of the car and allow a family sized vehicle with compact external dimensions.

Hardly a hairy chested macho persona is it.

Thats true about all hot hatches. I really like the EP3 Civics, got quite a lot of room, and the engine is supposed to be sweet. Also it has the reliability. Could anything from Renault or Mazda be an option?

The best/newest Golf GTi he can get for £10k. Preferably in black.

If he is single this choice will not in any way harm his chance with the ladies, as from personal experience, a black Golf Gti is the only car that all my female friends had nothing but praise for. biggrin

The are also usually pretty good to drive and hold their value.

Alfa 147 GTA maybe? Going up in price though and the cost to maintain it can be pretty steep unless you find a good specialist. Fast sods too and look the part. Should have the Q2 diff and 330mm brakes for the ultimate one.

Golf GTI sounds like a good choice, think he said he can get a MK5 for around that price.

He likes the look of this:http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201704044048685?advertising-location=at_cars&make=MAZDA&aggregatedTrim=MPS&model=MAZDA3&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&postcode=l192rf&price-from=9000&price-to=10000&sort=sponsored&radius=50&page=1

Are there any issues with the Mazda? I have personally not seen many of them which is always a bonus smile

Out of your choices it would be the Fiesta ST or even a Focus ST 5 pot.

If it were me it would either be a Focus ST or a BMW 130i as a leftfield choice.

MK2 Leon Cupra 240bhp as standard, like a GTI but with bigger turbo.

Get a facelift one if budget can stretch.

For £10k he could buy 2 mk5 GTi's and still have change to pay for his insurance and tax.

That could be true, but it would be a really nice Golf for 10k. Seat Leon looks good though.

If your looking at MK5 GTI get an Edition 30.

MK2 Leon Cupra as I said above look for a facelift one 2009+ will have a flat bottomed steering wheel, chunkier mirrrors etc. There was a slight update to the engine.
