Small demographic I know, but has anyone sold an E39 M5 in the UK recently? Did you achieve your asking price? If not, was there a marked difference?

I see there are several for sale currently, some have been for sale for a while, so there must be a reason why they aren't selling. Either they're over priced or over described (combination of the two).

Thanks.

Not very recently but circa 2 years ago (bare with me!). I sold the car ( 2001 facelift, silver over black with full history and 85K which i would describe as very good, zero corrosion, vanos x2 replaced under warranty and lots of preventative work etc etc) for 10K on the nose. There were plenty of leggy cars advertised for 8K and many (some still leggy) at 11-13K which appeared to remain for sale for protracted periods.

I priced mine at what I determined a fair price and of course I wanted it to sell quickly. It went within a week.

I don't know if that helps but I'm not sure the market has changed too much since then, i guess if its a good enough deal it will sell.

ETA It was priced at 10.5K

funny, a couple of years back E39 M5 would have fetched more than E36 M3, now it's the other way round.

Thanks Mark. Sounds like you got a decent deal tbh, and I maybe over paid for mine hehe

E36's have been barried up and used as drift cars, I reckon that is helping values of good ones. E39 M5's do not seem to attract the same clientele.

I must admit the guy who bought it was very pleased and I guess I could have asked more but as another car was inbound I needed it sold.

I understand how difficult the whole car market is at the moment, I'm about to sell a really really lovely E30 320is and am having trouble pricing it. The price of any M-powered E30 is so wide.

I couldn't believe the number of E39s that have appeared on AT recently and the asking prices tbh. eBay has a wider spread of prices but all you need to do is a MOT history check on certain ones from a certain county and they've usually been clocked. I find it hard to separate the wheat from the chaff and naturally for given supposed condition and mileage you're never going to go see the most expensive chancer advert from a dealer are you?

In the case of the E39 M5 I think asking prices will/are being dragged up not so much by speculative Hexagon types but the sheer number that have fallen into unscrupulous hands, where 'restoring' and 'lots spent' includes mileage correction and half baked corrosion fixes then tried to flip for same average price as a few years ago but being advertised as 'mint'. I'm sure I see around 2-3 E39 M5s being driven around by yoofs every day around here and they're not always the same ones.

Sold mine last week, went within 24hrs. Put it up last year zero interest, lowered the price this time round. Took a bit of a chip but bloke turned up with folding and drove it away there and then so didn't mind the slight hit for lack of agro. Was by far a minter but certainly a useable uptogether car that needed a few bits, but is going to need big things in a couple of years.
I think a lot of them are selling for way less than the window price or simply hanging around for ages

Well obviously I wouldn't want to tarnish any given dealer because of one example, but here's one I found earlier:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2000-X-BMW-M5-4-9-4DR-SA...tongue out2gAAOSw5UZY-RIw

If you have a look on bmw5 you'll find a few more stories and 'experiences' over the years

Sold mine last year to a trader (2002, Bluewater 65k miles) - advertised for 12k, took 8k. Punted on for around 18k after respray, wheel refurb, new tyres, 1 vanos refurb.

in continental Europe good examples (2002 or 2003, 50K miles or so) are reaching over 40 grand and going up, I sold mine couple of years ago and I regret it

I sold my Silverstome facelift November 2000 ( 115,000 ) 4 years ago for 8K. Car was flawless with no rust anywhere and jacking points good as new. Only mod was Eisenmann sport exhaust. The guy I sold it to sold it 2 years later for £10,250.

Great car but don't miss it at all.

Angrydog, sell it and move on to something better.

For £10k what's better than an E39 M5?

Picked up a pre lci e60 530d today exactly two weeks after selling my e39, still don't miss it. Was a lovely car but for what I need in a car now the e60 ticks more boxes. If anything the only thing I might miss is 2-3rd gear full throttle pulls.

Wow, really surprised to hear the lukewarm comments on the e39 M5 - not too many years back it was the definitive supersaloon. I can remember DeRestrictor waxing lyrical (as only he could!) about his... (Schnell!) Even today 400bhp is not to be sniffed at, especially in a n/a V8. Is it because they are not so usable now? (big bills looming, rust traps, etc.)?

For me it's just that it's an old motor and everything has moved on. Still like them and they look great and drive well if you get a nice one. I'm in a minority but had the E60 M5 after the E39 M5 and preferred the E60 in every way.

They're useable, I just think the game has moved on now. Great for the guys who have the time to maintain them properly, but I no longer do. I'm going to arrange a test drive of an F10 M5 soon as that is likely to be my next car after the stop gap.

Your probably right, my wife has a 16 plate Golf GTI that we use for general day to day and I have a F80 M3. If I had the money and space i would definately have loads of the cars I used to own in a large garage to look at and drive now and again and take to shows etc. I still love cars like the E39 M5 but with limited space and money I can't keep all my old cars! Out of all my old cars I'm afraid my old 3dr Sierra Cosworth would take a spot in the garage before another M5. That is one car I would love to have back if I had extra space money.

Nothing wrong with the E39 M5 though it's one of the best M cars ever.
