I'm looking to get an E91 335i as a family car - need something practical, not too wide so my wife can drive it and still packing a bit of punch so this ticks all the boxes.

I've been on really cheap classic/modern classic policies for the last few years but this car isn't eligible so I have to go through a mainstream insurer. The quotes I'm getting seem pretty high (~£800). Of course postcode, age etc. makes a difference but comparing like for like, it's more expensive than the M5 I had.

So have insurance premiums increased a lot recently? And does anyone have any insurer recommendations?

I've read of an increase ; but it does seem random : I know it's a big name so you probably thought of it but Aviva have twice been 50% of what other big brands quote : for me that is.
I had a 335i
My record is iffy as I had two at faults in 2014 - both times hitting objects in the road , 335i cost 10 grand to repair !
Still my current M3 insurance is only around 400£ with them , all extras I want and with my preferred body shop their repairer.
Good choice of car , 335i smile

I have two tips for cheaper insurance. 1) Get older 2) Don't crash

Can't help with 2 I'm afraid but you should be ok with 1 unless you have a picture of Dorian Grey or are Peter Pan.

I've got an E91 335i and pay less than £400 with Admiral - who have you had quotes from so far?

Sky: £680
Esure: £750
Admiral: £780
BMW Car Club scheme: £850 rolleyes

My M5 was with Admiral a few years ago for around £700, and I've got older and been accident/points free since then...

Is the problem that the classic policies don't provide NCD?

How much NCD are you applying to the quotes.

Correct they don't accrue NCD, but I still have 4 years to use (hopefully it hasn't expired!)
